Hi all! It's nice to be here, it seems to be a great forum. I had a sound issue, and I want to share it with you, in order to find a solution. I try to run an old game (Re-volt, a great radio-controlled cars simulation), but had a sound problem (see above), so I left the following message to Radgametools, company which produced the sound software used in game:

Dear Sirs.

I notice, and of course understand your site (http://www.radgametools.com/tech.htm#Miles) warning about support for end-users that are playing games using your technology (it's me!). But, in this case I must insist. The game support no longer exists, the game developer/publisher either disappears or is unavailable (http://www.3dgamers.com/companies/acclaim/) despite leave a wonderful title - Re-volt.

This is what happens when I try to run Re-volt: the game starts as usual, but when loading sounds it displays the following message - "Can't load generic SFX 'wavs\moto.wav' into slot 0!" and repeat this with all .wav files, each one at the other slots. I can play normally, but with no sound at all. My PC configuration is:

Windows XP SP2 - Creative Sound Blaster Live 24-bit external USB 5.1 - P4 3.4 GHz - 1Gb RAM - INTEL D865PERL - HD SEAGATE Barracuda 7200 80 Gb - GeForce 6800 ultra (mod) 256Mb AGP ASUS V9999 - Samsung SyncMaster 710n LCD - CoolerMaster JET4 - PS Seventeam 520W

I would appreciate if you could give any help on this issue.

----

They kindly answer me a few minutes later (a real nice feedback!):

----

Hi,

The warning is there because in most cases, we simply have no idea what the game developers are doing with our products. This sounds like a file system error of some kind, actually. Some of the older games don't work well with NT-based versions of Windows like XP, and in those cases, your best hope is to run them under Windows 98SE. (This is actually easy to do these days, by using Microsoft Virtual PC or another virtual-machine host.)

Sorry, but that's all I can suggest in this case! Good luck.
----

So, that's my story. I'm not wanting to use Microsoft Virtual PC, mainly because I dunno how, and do not wish to learn only to hear the sounds of the game. A friend suggest DOSBOX, which was unknown to me - then, after a net search, I found Vogons forum 😉 - But I'm still unsure if DOSBOX could be used in this case or not. Do you suggest another possible solution for this sound issue?

Works fine for me.

Windows XP SP2
AMD Semprom 3000+
ABIT NF7 (nVIDIA nForce2)
Creative SB Audigy LS
ATi Radeon X800GTO (playing at 1280x1024x16)

I am getting 60fps constant and the sound is okay.

Do you have latest drivers installed for everything?

Intel i7 5960X
Gigabye GA-X99-Gaming 5
8 GB DDR4 (2100)
8 GB GeForce GTX 1070 G1 Gaming (Gigabyte)

Thx for the answer eL_PuSHeR - I have the latest drivers installed for everything indeed... when you say "Works fine for me" you are saying that you use DOSBOX to run the game, or that you run the game normally without DOSBOX? (Edited) -> I try DOSBOX now, and got a message "this program cannot run in DOS mode".

Re-Volt is a Windows game so you cannot use DOSBox for running it. I executed it natively under WinXP.

Re-volt works for me (WinXP) once it's fully patched up. There's a download floating around which supplies a set of Re-volt patches and allows you to swap between them. Can't remember where I found it but it's called "Re-Volt PatchSwitch versione 1.00". It's in Italian as well but easy enough to understand!

Good luck!

Reckless: I found it (http://www.aliasrevoltmaster.com/dl_uti.htm), but use sound editor instead of the patch, and now the sounds are ok! Thank you all very much, nice feedback! 😁

When I tried to play 1.0 unpatched I kept getting lockups on the 'loading screens'.

Re-Volt wouldn't work for me in XP when XP was installed on an NTFS partition. Try installing XP on a FAT32 partition, and installing the game on a FAT32 partition also... it SHOULD work great then... at least thats what got it running for me 😁
love that game, an all time fav of mine.

That's absurd. Your problem surely lies somewhere else. Revolt works for me on WinXP + NTFS. Filesystems are transparent to software.
