Right. Having major problems running Doom under Win XP Pro.
It will run perfectly but with no sound... So I dled VMDSound 2.0.4 and the first update, as well as launch pad. Now what happens when I attempt to run Doom v 1.9 with VMDSound is that a Dos prompt window pops up... scrolls through something too fast for me to read, and then gets to a screen labeled

Doom System Startup v1.9

It then goes through about... 7 operations before getting to this

R_Init: Init DOOM refresh daemon - [.. ]

and it sits there with two dots and a flashing curser. And as far as I am able to tell the prossessor isnt doing jack crap. Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks for that DosFreak, but I would like to get what I have running properly. I've versions of several games that all run off the same engine, which give me the same problem.

In all honesty...give it up. The DOOM engine has a "PopF" audio problem that causes it to perform horribly under XP (and not at all without hacking for NT4/2000). No matter what you do it will always perform more poorly (with sound) on an NT OS than on DOS/Win9x.

Having said that, there are a number of ports available at:
http://doomworld.com/ports/windows.shtml

and most (JDOOM included) allow you to switch most enhancements off. The only good reason to not use a port is if there's no port available. The "DOOMSDAY" engine behind JDOOM also works for "Heretic" and "Hexen".

About the only title left "out in the cold" is "STRIFE", which used a modified version of the DOOM engine. Unfortunately, that source code was never released, so there are no ports for STRIFE.

The closest thing to a STRIFE port is "Vavoom", but it's not actually playable (more like an experimental effort).
