I got a few .diff files, and have no idea what they are, how to use them, and I can only speculate.

I speculate I'm supposed to compile them into source code, or some off/odd thing.

Help me out.

I looked through the guides and other topics, but maybe I didn't look hard enough? It's been two hours and I'm tired.

Yes, they are source code patches. Unless you are a programmer, forget them and look for a CVS build which includes them. There are several DOSBOX builds made by various people.
