I can't get DosBox in the right full screen mode. The box's too big for the screen or too small. I just want it to maximize to the right size.

Edit dosbox.conf accordingly, mainly output=XXXX, fullresolution=WidthXHeight and Windowresolution=WidthXHeight

What I mean is, is it possible to let DosBox maximize itself to screen size, just like maximizing other programs. When changing the conf file the program shows just a small size program within the full screen.

Unless I am mistaken, I think he means running in a maximised window that occuppies all available desktop space, just like when you maximize any windows program that do not run fullscreen.
Try setting windowresolution=resolution of your desktop.
If you mean FULLSCREEN, use ALT-ENTER but configure dosbox.conf accordingly: specially change output=surface to output=overlay (if using an ATi card, also output=ddraw) or output=opengl (if using an nVIDIA card).
If you are running a LCD or TFT monitor you may need to set fullresolution=W*H to its native resolution. For my TFT > fullresolution=1280x1024
