I am in the unfortunate situation of my computer not being equipped with a good old gameport, so I can't use anything but the keyboard for controls in my old DOS/Win95 games.

I have never tried DOSBox, because I don't really need it... yet.
I would really like to know though if DOSBox can translate input from a USB device to gameport input to fool the games into thinking I have a gameport controller - and if so, if this could cause any gameplay problems with regard to latency - or if I'm just going to need an actual gameport?

If anybody should know of another program that might have this feature, I would greatly appreciate that too. Thank you.

DOSBox supports USB Gamepads/devices to an extend. Most games with gamepad functions work (think a gameport or serial device is connected), but not all. Just try.

Well, that worked somewhat, problem is it will only support 2 buttons. Is there anything else I can do about that?

set the joysticktype in dosbox.conf to 4axis
you have 4 buttons then.
That is the max btw.
