hi all! sorry if this had been posted before. I've been using VDMS for several months and just recently I got these error messages telling me that they have problems with the AdLib, AdLib Controllers, and SBWave something, (there are three of them in total) everytime I try to launch the game. The game does launch but there's no sound in it. Does anyone know why? Or should I ask for some help at the VDMS' site? Thank you..!

see ya later

You probably ran some sort of Registry Cleaner or you registry got busted. Go in Control Panel and choose to "repair" VDMSound, this should recreate any missing entries.

Thanks for the reply, vladr.

Anyways, I've tried to uninstall then reinstall the VDMS but the same thing happened.

I guess I'll just give your suggestions a try..

umm.. I've tried it and I think I have no idea of how to "repair" the vdms registry. I tried to uninstall it, remove the entries in regedit, and reinstall, but it still gives the error messages. I wonder what's wrong with my vdms..

Anyways, here are the error messages..

and finally..

Note: it makes no difference whether I select Yes or No as both don't make the sound and music of the game appear..

Where on earth did you install VDMSound? If I'm reading the messages right, it looks like you installed it inside your personal documents folder. In any case, at present, you must run it and the game in a folder that follows the 8+3 filename rules that old DOS programs required.

IOW:

C:\Utils\Audio\VDMSound\
and
C:\FUN\CKONG\CKONG.EXE

...are fine.

Where as
C:\WindowsTools\SoundTools\VDMSound
and
C:\DosGames\CKONG\CKONG.EXE

..are not.

Don't confuse the heck out of arnold08, Nicht. He probably installed it athe proper place, but LaunchPad (what he is using) generates temporary .ini/.nt/.bat/... files in the folder that shows up, which is normal.

Arnold, to "repair" VDMSound just go to Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs, find VDMSound in the list and choose to "repair" it.

Cheers,
V.

Umm.. well, Nicht, all I can remember is I downloaded VDMS from somewhere (can't remember), copied it to a folder in my C: drive, ran the Install command, and everything was fine, until one day the error messages appeared. I'm not sure what I had done but I don't think I ran any registry cleaners.. 🙄

Note: it makes no difference whether I select Yes or No as both don't make the sound and music of the game appear..
--> what I mean is, if I choose "No" for the first error message, the other two messages won't appear.

Thanks for that anyway Nicht.. 😁
And thanks for the hint, vladr, I'll try that out 😉

okay, so I've tried to repair the VDMS in the Add/Remove Programs, which apparently is the VDMS 2 (Alpha / Beta.. can't remember) 3. I "repair"ed it, but the messages still appear. I tried to uninstall the Launchpad 1.0.0.7 and then the VDMS 2, and install only the VDMS 2. Then, when I right-click on an icon, there is only one "Run in VDMS" - the one without the musical note beside it. I tried the Run in VDMS but the sound still doesn't appear. Should I install another particular version of VDMS then? If so, which one is it?
Thanks for the help so far anyway guyz.. 😁

1. Uninstall VDMSound using Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel. (Hm - but how to uninstall Launchpad? Well, maybe is not necessary!)
2. Install VDMSound according to directions here:
showthread.php?s=&threadid=1226
3. (Optional) If you're feeling real experimental, use the updates here too:
showthread.php?s=&postid=14204#post14204
Step 3 is not recommended for the new user, however - Vlad's new Update #2 and Launchpad 1.0.1.0 is quite the beta version, and some users experience errors.

Doing the above will at least get us on the same page.
VDMSound 2.0.3 is old anyhow. Install VDMSound 2.0.4 and Update 1.

You hinted that you did not get VDMSound from the official site. Do you know where it was? That site should instead be pointing people to the official site instead of offering an old version for download. Still, you'll have this. 🙄

Dear god, there was a 2.0.3? When was this, like, 1997? 😉

Yes, it’s my fault.

According to Vlad's page, April 25th, 2001. Very old version.

It was a joke, referring to how little Vlad works on VDMSound nowadays 😉

Yes, it’s my fault.
