Hey all, I've been playing the original Akalabeth (1979) for about three weeks now. I am very good at slaying monsters of all difficulties, but I've come to the conclusion that beating the game, or even a single mission is absolutely impossible. This could be due to a bug or I don't know what. I hope I can (finally) find out today. I hope I'm in a good spot.

I'm using the Original Basic. It's at the top of the Downloads Link on the left. The game itself is 108KB.

Anyway, I talk to Lord British (for the mission), and he tells me to kill (something) as he's supossed to. So I kill it, return, and get this message: "Complete thy Quest -Press Spacebar to Continue." This happens every time, no matter how many times I kill the monstor he tells me to kill.

Who has played this game? I've tried different versions and even a remake but it allways ends up the same. Someone has to have beaten this game since it came out 25 years ago.

Meeting adjourned. Oh, I am sorry sir I didn't mean to overstep my bounds, you say that.

Well, you aren't playing the original version of Akalabeth for starters, so it is likely a bug in your port. The original version of Akalabeth was released in 1979 for the Apple II or II+ w/48KB of RAM and Applesoft BASIC, well before the first PC was ever released.

Are there any other ports? Every port I've found is the same down to the byte size. The thing is the caption in my link says that it is a port using the original Basic code. So is every PC version bugged?

If it isn't also compiled with the original Basic interpreter, that original code could potentially produce something quite different, I daresay.

I gather that remake is no longer actively maintained?

Very true, I don't think that remake site has been updated in years. I think the port on the web page is the original 1980 PC port. The same file is found at free games bownload and 'the-underdogs.'

Well, let's do it this way.

Those are the files on my Ultima Collection CD; the README.NOW says it was especially made for Ultima IX. If the checksums (and not just the sizes!) are the same as the version(s) you have downloaded, then the files are definitely the same. (You can view CRC32 checksums in WinZip.)

Thanks Jorpho, I actually have the Ultima Collection. I could never get thew color remake to work. It always crashes in DOSBox and doesn't work natively in XP. So I just now thought to make it run under Windows 95' compatability and it works fine. I won!!!

As for the original black & White port, I guess it is busted. But it's still strange being on all the abandonware sites.
