So, I installed TR1 with glidos and VDMsound about a week ago. I purchased glidos to get rid of that horrible spinning logo, and was happy with the results until yesterday. I've been having problems yesterday and today with the game freezing during the menus, especially after saving. the specifics are thus:

#1- hit escape, the menu comes up, and i can only use the left and right arrow keys to scroll around the item menu, nothing else. up and down don't work, enter doesn't work, escape doesn't work.

#2- hit escape, hit down, save game, hit escape to return to game, menu shrinks but doesn't disappear all the way from the screen, instead it freezes as all the icons become a little jumbled mass in the middle of the screen. when the game is restarted, the save file is corrupt (savegame4.31 or somesuch)

#3- just started about half an hour ago, open glidos, click start game, DOS window pops up and goes partway through loading and then just stops

#4- replaced number 3 after two repetitions, open glidos, click start game, nothing happens at all. nothing. at all.

i can provide more details if necessary, although i'll go ahead and list off anything i can think of now:

windows XP home, sp2
AMD Athlon 64 x2 Dual Core 3800+, 2.0 GHz
1 GB of ram
NVIDIA geForce 6150 LE integrated graphics chipset
NO errors listed in error console
checked for spyware/adware/viruses on a daily basis

if i'm leaving out any important details, just ask, i'll be hanging around the forum for the next few days, waiting for an answer...

EDIT: This Page details the specs of my computer, for the most part. as far as the selectable items, i have the integrated graphics and audio (planning to upgrade as soon as i can afford it), and i think the rest is detailed earlier in the post.

as far as glidos settings, it's set to OpenGL, 1024x768, Full Screen, using Texture Pack "Silverlok", and i've tried both turning on and turning off VDos32 (after it quit loading, so it didn't seem to change anything). Hope that covers everything![/url]

Strange! The programs TR1, Glidos, VDMSound can't have spontaneously changed. Something about your system must be different. Have you installed anything recently? Any changes of drviers? Might you have gotten any SpyWare?

Whatever the cause, one thing worth trying is VDos32. You just stick it in the Glidos folder, and then select "Use VDos32" in Glidos's config.

i haven't installed, uninstalled, or changed anything in the past week, other than when i installed tomb raider. i'll try downloading vdos32, to see if that will work, but the fact that it's not even opening the dos window anymore makes me wonder if i shouldn't just uninstall and reinstall (sigh).

VDos32 works without using Windows' DOS subsystem so it's worth a go.

I have experienced the "only the left and right keys" functioning problem before .

I can reproduce it ( don't ask , I didn't try this on purpose 😀 every time by holding down lara's 'free-look' key ( the zero on the number pad ) while minimizing the glidos/tombraider window and goning to the desktop ( or other programs). When the glidos/tombraider window is restored for some reason all the keys are locked out except the left and right arrow keys.

As for the 'dos box then nothing problem' this (for me at least) almost always has to do with ( in order of importance )

soundcard / onboard sound conflicts

or

cd-rom issues
although the 'dos box hang , is ALMOST always a sound (or sound card especially if you have an on-board sound card and a real sound card ) issue ( again for me )

I f your computer has reset some of the BIos options because of a power failure or other anamoly the default settings may be causing a sound conlict ( I have to make sure my onbaord midi port is turned off or glidos/TR hangs at the dosbox everytime) .

try going into the bios and turning off the on-board sound then test TR if that works at least you know that something somewhere got changed with the sound settings,

hope that helps
