I originally posted this text to a comment in a blog, but actually I think due the broader audience I can easier get help here 😀

I'm running WXP, inserted the CD and tried to install it. I don't remember how many times I started setup.exe, because after the installer splash screen, the pre-initialization started but hung at 100%. In my impatience I always clicked ESC when focusing the installer and it got away. I copied all the files to the hard disc and tried again. This time I also tried various combinations of the "compatibility mode", ranging from Windows 95 to 2000. Nothing worked.

Next try: I crawled through my CD archive and found an old Windows 98 copy! Luckily years ago I was rich enough to buy my copy of Vmware, so what the heck, I fired it up and installed the real Windows 98 onto it. After this was done, I started installing QFQ5 and the installation worked!

Success seemed so near, however when I finished my installation and ran the binary, it outright crashed. Now way to get it running. For a moment a black screen appeared, but that was it. I was able to locate a 1.2 update patch, but that didn't changed anything.

Now, hours have already passed. I was starring at the W98 installation and the error message, suddenly an installer came up from QFQ5, in my real WXP environment. Wtf? Yes, the few times I started the installer hours ago from the files I copied to the hard disc suddenly was thinking "yeah, fine human, you're still there, you've earned it -> install the game". I did that job and got the files successfully installed under WXP.

Unfortunately fate predeterminated that I shall not play the game under WXP. The same problem as in W98 happened; even with less error message. In W98 at least I got a dump of CPU registered and a memory address with an error, in WXP I only got the "Send Feedback to M$" dialog.

I also tried various compatibility combination again with the QFQ5 exe files, but nothing helped so far.

So, I'm wondering, how the heck you guys got this running 😀 Is there anything I'm missing?

I'm not sure if buying another copy can solve my problems ...

QfG requires a patch to let it run on Win2k/XP. You can find it on my QfG patch page. Do this after you've applied the 1.2 patch. Note that after you install the WinXP patch, you may need to delete the QGM sub-folder. Several have reported that updating Quick Time helps. Updating my graphics driver was the final thing that allowed QfG5 to start for me.

Ok it works now, awesome. The problem was the mounting of the ISOs, I guess. I was having mounted both CDs and it crashed always. I tried a few days later, only the with the “GAME” CD mounted and it worked flawlessly.

Sometimes things can be fixed so easy, but yet I decided to install W98 in the first place … 😀
