Found the orginal Carmageddon in my brother's desk today as we were cleaning it out. Got a wild hair and have been trying to get it running all day. Here's what I've tried:

1- downloaded VDM sound and used it to install carmageddon on my hard drive
2- tested the sound and it worked fine; no MIDI selected
3- downloaded the 3dfx patch from gamespot and extracted it
4- installed Glidos

When I try to play the game through Glidos the screen turns black for a moment, then gives me the following error message:

c:\Windows\system32\autoexec.nt The system firle is not suitable for running MS-Dos and microsoft windows applications

I'd appreciate any feedback anyone has to offer. I used to love playing this game back in the day.

I remember seeing something like that before, which was damage caused by spyware. Follow this link to Microsoft's instructions for fixing it.

I tried the link and followed the troubleshooting tips on microsoft's site. Now a black screen opens, it looks like it's loading, then everything closes and i'm right back to where i started. I'll keep playing with it; I had no idea it'd be this difficult to play old games on new PCs. Thanks for your help by the way. Much appreciated.

Okay. I feel like i'm so close! Played around a bit more and now I'm getting this error:

Fatal error, this .exe must have keyboard.cok in the data folder

I don't know what's wrong; the file's there, it's just not registering for some reason.

These problem aren't usual. I think there is something horribly wrong with your system.

Those instructions from Microsoft aren't explaining the usual process to getting a DOS program to run. They are telling you how to cure a problem caused by a Virus or spyware.

If it were me, I'd reinstall Windows from scratch. Once you've had that sort of damage you can't really trust the system.
