Not sure if this has been suggested before, but many other "emulators" for console systems have a save state feature to save the state of the emulator to a file, which can be restored.

This allows a person to "save the game" in places it's not normally possible to save.

Not sure how difficult it would be to implement in DOSbox, but it would sure be a nice feature.

I'm asking for it, because, for some reason I can't figure out, Day of the Tentacle refuses to let me save the game.

It has. Correct. Very difficult. Will not be done.
