I'm unsuccessfully trying to run Shadow of the Comet, in the CD version, from DOSBox. Currently, both Shadow and the HPL Museum just shut down with "Divide Error", and lock DB...

I gather the error would be originally caused by a machine that was too fast, so I was experimenting with various cycle and core settings - to no avail so far... :\ Would anyone have any recommended settings for the game? Or is there something else to try and change in the config? (The game does install, by the way, and I mount it with "SHADOWCD" as the label. I tried the floppy version, too, and it runs correctly.)

I'm running 0.72 under XP, on a P4 3.4 GHz. I also tried the CVS build, but the result is the same.

No idea 🙁 A wild, wild shot: Don't mount as E? Only mount as C & D ? Tried older builds? Maybe one that includes the simple core?

Another shot in the dark:

Try making a BIN/CUE image pair and use it with imagemount.

Hey, I just got it! 😀

I was doing it according to a suggestion for installing this game, and I was mounting it with the -ioctl parameter. For some reason, it was causing the crash. Turns out that when I get rid of that parameter and only mount the game with "mount D h:\ -t cdrom -label SHADOWCD", it works correctly. Both the game and the museum run now. 😀

How exactly did you mount it when it doesn't work, and how when it works?

mount D h:\ -ioctl -t cdrom -label SHADOWCD
and
mount D h:\ -t cdrom -label SHADOWCD

It's really weird, though... because now I tried: mount D h:\ -ioctl -t cdrom -label SHADOWCD again, just out of curiosity... and it didn't crash. Now the game works with or without -ioctl, for some reason. I even reinstalled it to see if something happens, and all went correctly. I don't really know if I did something that could have eliminated the crash at the same time that I removed the -ioctl parameter the first time, or if there was some system issue that caused this...

Damn, I just thought now that maybe I caught some rootkit that messes with the system... :\ Oh well, off to check. RRevealer, Gmer, Ice Sword and other tools don't show anything, though...

Hehe hope the rootkit isn't that serious 😉
The -ioctl is automatically used in 0.72, that's why i was wondering why
it would have an effect at your place. Maybe there was some additional
modification you did during installation or something, like mounting a different
drive (there are picky games around).
