Hello there,

Please forgive my poor english and technique,
I played again TR 1 for a few weeks 😀 using some of the great stuff I found here and at Glidos and Xtra (thank you for all the astonishing work guys!).

Graphics and textures are working perfectly but I seem to encounter some problems with the ambience soundfiles : this is locked on the first level sound set (the caves) and does not trigger at level changes nor events 🙁

Somehow, all other audios including the intro music file are working fine.

I tried switching either CD and Mp3 in the Glidos audio properties... without results.

Did somebody encountered the same problem ??

My configuration is :

Asus A8jm notebook with centrino duo T2400 1,8Ghz, 1Go ram, running Win XP Pro, software: Glidos 1.4, Vdms 2.1.0, TR 1 Rush Patch, JC textures set, installed with TR 1 advanced installer, and the TR audio pack 1.6 fr, running the original TR CD (french version).

Thanks for any advice...

Changing the setting from CD to MP3 is correct, but you also need to download and install the Audio pack, and you need to install TR1 using the Preconfigured archive

Thank you for your answer.

I read a lot on this forum all about TR sound issues, didn't find anybody with exactly the same problem... I 'll probably try to learn more as soon as I can find the time to.

Well, for now I just de-installed and re-installed all my software, including the audio pack and VDMS.

Used your preconfigured set for the re-installation as you said, and even got back the Glidos logo 😀 for a while.

Sounds kind of strange it didn't solve the problem though, I must've done something wrong again :'(

I think I understand Glidos can read some audio files from the packages, and VDM reads the others... directly from the CD ? (I can hear it turning on sometimes). I 've taken a look inside the folders and seen there was 59 mp3 files inside the Glidos "tracks" subfolder, and only nine audio files readable on the CD. Is that related with the problem ?

Searching and Trying again, but any other advice is welcome 😒

paul, morane,

not sure if this is related , but in some instances cd/dvd emulaters drives or multiple drives can have some odd reactions with glidos ( and a number of other things ) especially if you have ever installed any starforce protected games ( this can be a persistent if seemingly eradic problem even if you have used the starforce uninstall tool ) .

Not sure anyone is seeing this problem anymore , but it caused me no end of consternation a while back .

one other thing that I have seen causing problems with glidos is if you have more than one sound card (like for instance the mobo onboard sound is not being disabled ) ,

Morane, did you set Glidos's Audio config to "Play MP3 tracks"?

Well, if you are speaking about the audio options in the Glidos windows ("none"/"CD"/"Mp3") I tried again both Mp3 and CD.

When on "CD" I can hear the TR Intro theme, all the game sounds (water, footsteps, guns, ennemies...) and the sound theme from the caves level, whatever level I am in actually.

When on "Mp3" I have the intro theme but no level theme, though all game sounds are on.

Tried to turn the Mp3 on and off directly from the Glidos .ini file also, with the same results.

Sounds strange I could not find anyone experiencing the same issue on the TRO forum either, I'll keep searching anyway.

Thank you for bothering with this.

MP3 is the correct setting. That means use the audio pack. No other setting will work.

It's not that you are still installing the Voodoo rush patch? You don't need to do that with the preconfigured archive.

I'm just going to download and reinstall everything here to check none of the versions on the web site have gotten messed up.

Works fine here. Are you starting the game using Glidos's "Start" button? It wont work if you just double click tomb.exe.

Glidos and z9d10, thanks again for your attention on this.

Concerning drives, I am using only one, a DVD drive indentified as E:\

I do not know anything about the starforce software, but I took a look at my hardware panel and there is only one sound system identified as "Soudmax Digital Integrated HD Audio".

As for the Tomb.exe file, it is the right one actually I made that mistake already putting the bad one in the Glidos directory and that resulted on a crash.

To start the game I am using the "lancer le jeu" button, corresponding to "start" in the english version, I believe.

Could you please tell me if the Audio pack installing his stuff in the "audio" subdirectory in the Glidos directory is correct?

Yes, audio pack installing, should create an Audio folder in the Glidos folder.

Don't mess with Tomb.exe at all, in any way, not even slightly 😁 . Just install the preconfigured archive, and you have the correct Tomb.exe in the correct place.

Sounds like I'm playing the revenge of the Sith audio pack again 😀

To make sure I was doing things properly I de-installed again my game and software, then re-installed using the links you provided :

Glidos first , then used the preconfigured archive, then the JC textures set, and at last the audiopack 1.6.

Turned on the Mp3 option with still the same result: ingame sounds but no level background music. By the way I found the Intro screen music is playing only when launching the game, and not any more when returning back from the game to the intro, very strange indeed...

Think I'm gonna try with another PC : notebook's hardware maybe incriminated since there is no software problem to be find apparently.

Will feed back as soon as I can,

Cordially :p

You could try VDos32. You just download it, place it in the Glidos folder, and config Glidos to use it under the "Dos" tab. That takes over the whole process of running the game from Window's DOS emulation, and should isolate you from a lot of problems.

Hello again, coming back here with some bad news 🙁

I tried with Vdos 32 and with a brand new config with my desktop : same results everywhere...

I noticed the onboard audio is a Soundmax also, I think I should try with a real soundcard if I can get one (but will not be possible with my notebook I'm afraid).

I could not find many info about problems with onboard audio chipsets and TR 1 : [

_to be continued_

Many thanks for the help, anyway, merry Christmas and Happy new year to all 😀

VDos32 and Windows' own DOS emulation failing in the same way suggests to me it isn't to do with your sound card. Are you absolutely sure you haven't installed TR1 in one place, but then used an old copy installed somewhere else? Or likewise with Glidos?

And presumably you mean v1.40 of Glidos, not v1.4?

What you are experiencing is what I might expect if you have the wrong Tomb.exe or an old version of Glidos.

This is puzzling me a lot since I re-installed all the software following your instructions, and everything is working fine except the soundpack options...

Glidos is the ver. 1.40 fer sure, I'm not dealing any more with the Tomb.exe versions because I used the preconfigured archive with the last re-installation and I did not make any other manipulation.

Could the glide driver switch between OpenGlide and Voodoo make any difference? But I think I tried this already 🙁

No chance there could be any compatibility issue with the TR 1 french CD and the soundpack?

I 'm joining pics of what my Tombraid and Glidos folders look like, if that could be of any help...

Good be the French CD, maybe. The triggers must be in the level files, and they could differ on the French version, I guess. Seems the most likely cause out of things you have mentioned.

I'm sorry to be a bother, but I've just installed the new audio pack, Vdos32 and Glidos, and everything is working fine, but the tracks are in the wrong order. So the background noise in Peru is Natla's final line and the first few Lara lines in Lara's Home are music tracks. What do I have to do to get them to play in the right order? Thanks in advance.

Also, I might make a new soundtrack for Unfinished Business if I have the time, using the old "texture-memory" method. 😀

It need to be VDos32 v0.8, and you should install TR1 using the preconfigured archive.

Oh and configure Glidos's audio to MP3.
