When I go to multiplayer i click the ipx connection and click start. it goes to the next screen, but when I click create new game on the next screen it blacks out (after a few seconds) and gives me an error code:

I don't think its the matter of the bought game - I have the same issue...

Are you running it in DOSBOX?

I too have had it fall over. I ran several version one I downloaded in order to have it work on XP machine ... and used CD too fill in the gaps - there didn't seem to be any...

It just seems to be the IPX protocol falling over...

We won't give support for running non-legal copies of games in DOSBox.

I suggest you look for "Warcraft II Battle.net Edition" (BNE). This is a Windows port of Warcraft II that runs perfectly fine under XP. The game is easily available on eBay, and it's not expensive.
