I have gone thru much searching and cannot remember who provided this solution to using Dark Forces with VDMS...but the solution is to run IMUSE.EXE with VDMSound. This is the setup utility. From then on run DARK.EXE with VDMSound.

Ahh...I see IMUSE takes you straight to the soundcard setup without the long delay that SETUP causes. You still need SETUP for things like controller setup, changing the type of install, and the number of Digital audio channels (which oddly enough doesn't appear on the IMUSE executable...).
In any case, SETUP works as well. Quick Search will pull up the needed info:

The most important thing is that you allow a good long amount of time for the setup program to start.
