First of all, I know this a very nOOb thing to ask, yes. 😊

See, I've been playing a lot of DOS games lately, using the surface / none output / filter combo, mostly for speed issues. This has never been a problem, but I've started to wonder if DOS games did look this blocky back in the day.

I understand that they probably did, that it is my memories what makes me remember otherwise. But on the other hand, I can't help but thinking that pixels must look bigger in my 17' CRT monitor than they did in my old 14' screen, or that my old Trident 9400CXI card probably was better at drawing stuff at 320x240 than any swank 3D video card.

So, my questions basically are:

- Am I right? Did DOS games look better in real DOS than with DOSBox with surface / none settings?

- Of all the output modes and filters, which combo does more justice to DOS games without making them look too altered? Are the filters very CPU intensive?

- Does my 3D card / 17' monitor have any important role to play in the way DOS games look under DOSBox or DOSBox works exactly the same with every card / monitor combination?

Pretty much that's it. Thanks for your time.

If you play games with dosbox in fullscreen and original resolution, they should look exactly the same as in DOS (with a CRT monitor, LCD will have scaling no matter what). All the other filters will alter the picture in one way or the other, depends on the personal preference what looks better. I mostly use none with the games I am familiar with.
