this game just doesn't want to work.
i do everything. i follow your guide. i follow other people's guides. nothing works.
i install the game.
i mount my drives and i type install. i click "easy" install. it copies the files to my disk. i setup my working sound drivers. everything's great.

i play it using masterlu.bat in dosbox. the game runs perfectly.
however, if i want to run it again after quiting dosbox, i can't.
i do the exact same thing to play the game.
i mount my c drive (mount c c:\dosgames\riddle)
i mount my cd drive (mount d j:\ -t cdrom -ioctl) my cd drive is j:\
i type at the z prompt "C:"
i am in "C:\>"
i type "masterlu"
pauses then crashes with an error.
says this:

FATAL ERROR ENCOUNTERED:
FILE NOT FOUND

ERROR CODE: 0x0800
CODE FOUND IN: MASTER.M4E
OFFENDING EXE: RIDDLE.EXE
SOURCE CODE INDEX: ..\FILEIO\F_SYSFIL.CPP:519
PATH TO EXE: C:\
DESCRIPTION:
HASH FILE NOT FOUND: C:\RIDDLE\RIPLEY.HAS

but i DO have the hash file. that exact one in the directory of my installed masterlu (riddle).
what is this? can anyone help me?

This one is the culprit. During install it seems you did

mount c c:\dosgames

which is correct. Use the same (WITHOUT "\riddle" that is!!) when you want to play.

but the riddle in the dosgames\riddle is the folder where i installed the game.
is that a problem?

yes. Don't EVER mount the folder you installed to directly. ALWAYS use the exact same mount for playing as the mount you did for installing.

With a little bit of brainwork, it's very easy to understand why the error comes up, too. Just look at the error message:

HASH FILE NOT FOUND: C:\RIDDLE\RIPLEY.HAS

The game can't find that file, of course, because the way you've mounted your c:\ drive, there is no "c:\riddle\" directory at all. Just do what Dominus said, and everything will be allright.
