Hopefully this is simple.

I have a fairly basic question - I am trying to install a game using DosBox - The game originally shipped on two disks and you ran INSTALL.EXE on Disk 1 and then after a while, it would tell you to remove Disk 1 and Insert Disk 2 and Press ENTER to continue.

I have Disk 1 and Disk 2 in separate folders, and I figured out how to use the commands:
Mount A C:\Disk 1\ - t floppy
Mount C C:\Game
A:
Install

Now - how do I tell the program to look for the second directory - I know I can unmount and mount them, but I think I have to quit the install program to do this.

I checked the WIKI and it looks like IMGMOUNT with dual images and Ctrl-F4 will do this for HD and CD-ROM images, but it wasn't clear if this would work for floppies.

(Also, I have individual files from the disks in HD directrories, not .iso or .img files, although I suppose I could burn them to a different format)

Try combining the floppy contents into one folder.

Thought about doing that, there are files named patch.exe in each folder and they are different file sizes, so I don't think that will work.

imgmount does look like it handles floppies, but I don't know if I need to burn the files to an image format to use it.

Thank you MiniMax !!!

I actually tried mounting the single folder and then copying disk two after the load and the files were locked.

I'll try imagemounting both images, and using Ctrl-F4, but it looks like Virtual Floppy Drive can work as well.

Last thing - I think I am using DosBox 0.63 - Do you know if ImgMount was supported back then - guess it might be time to upgrade if not.

Definitely upgrade. You can even without any problems at all install 0.72 alongside 0.63. They go into different program folders and can happy co-exist.

Well, I got it to work, but I didn’t really use any of the “Approved” methods, so I’m posting what I did do.

First, you need to back up your disk files or at least make sure you are using copies and not the originals.

Next, you need to download and install a program called Unlocker (I had version 1.8.1 previously installed). It is freeware, and you can get it here.

Mount the \Disk 1 folder per my initial post and run the game's install program.

When the program asks you to insert the second disk and press enter, use Windows explorer, right-click all the files in the Disk 1 folder and select Unlocker.

In the Unlocker window, select all files and click Unlock.

Now delete these files and copy over the files from the Disk 2 folder.

Now press Enter and the install should finish normally.

Things I tried that didn’t work.

• If you just try to delete the Disk 1 files, you get a “File In Use Error” and can’t do it.
• I tried to use ImgMount, but it will only load images and not files in directories.
• I tried Virtual Floppy Drive - it created an A:\Drive, but again, it said no disk was inserted and asked me to open an image. If I tried to drag files to the A:\ prompt, it gave me a “Please Insert Disk” error. There might have been a way around this, but I didn’t find it.
• WinImage likely would have worked around either error, but it was a bit fussy on the install, and also was not really clear if it was payware, shareware, or trialware, so I didn’t mess with it.

Thank you again for all the tips and suggestions.

WinImage is pretty much the standard floppy imaging tool for Windows It's also useful for dealing with HD images for virtual machines as well.

WinImage is a shareware product. You may copy, distribute, and try it for free, but if you use for longer than the evaluation period, you must register. You will receive a valid license, a registration code and the latest release.

Actually, I like the method I used. Nothing against WinImage and there are likely freeware imaging programs that would work also, but Unlocker is freeware and handy for other things, and WinImage is payware and b/c of how the files are setup with these games, I would have to image the drives just to read them into DOSBOX (and for more than two disks the command line might get too long), and then have DOSBOX extract them again.

It's a bunch of extra steps on top of the added cost.
