When I try to run Carmageddon with Glidos and VDMS, I get this error:

Unable to initialize and configure emulation module 'Joystick Controller'. 0x80004004 - Operation aborted
Could not locate the configuration property 'MapFile' in either of the
[Joystick Controller.config] or [*.config] INI sections (see
C:\PROGRA~1\VDMSound\VDMS.INI:244). Do you want to continue?

The error suggests that it's VDMS that it's the VDMS config that you need to look into.

Yes, that is strange. I've never seen that error before. It looks like it is actually an error reported by VDMS, since nothing else is going to refer to a line withing VDMS.INI
