I just downloaded and installed DOS BOX hoping to run an ancient game called The 7th Guest. But I can't mount a drive because I can't type the essential \ command.
It seems while all the other keys are fine [ has shifted to the ] key and ] has shifted to the \ key shifting \ into oblivion.
Obviously \ works everywhere else including the CMD window.
Any ideas?

Q: I can't type \ or : in DOSBox.
A: This is a known problem. It only occurs if your keyboard layout isn't US.
Some possible fixes:
1. Switch the keyboard layout of your operating system.
2. Use / instead.
3. Open the DOSBox configuration file and change usescancodes=false
to usescancodes=true.
4. Add the commands you want to execute to the [autoexec]-section
of the DOSBox configuration file.
5. Change the DOS keyboard layout (see Section 7: Keyboard Layout).
6. Use ALT-58 for : and ALT-92 for \.
7. For \ try the keys around "enter". For ":" try shift and the keys
between "enter" and "l" (US keyboard layout).
8. Try keyb.com from FreeDOS (http://projects.freedos.net/keyb/).
Look for keyb2.0 pre4 as older and newer versions are known to
have a bug in the loader routines.

KEYB gets me "codepage 437 has been loaded"
What's English? KEYB sp is for Spanish but KEYB EN isn't English.

I'm so lost I don't even know why my US HP PC would not have a US keyboard. 🤣 I find no settings in Control Panel that would allow me to try any other settings.
No, no, we aren't talking about Control Panel. I mean typing keyb <keyboard country id> at the DOSBox Z:\> prompt.
For instance, keyb uk (for United Kingdom).

OK, thanks... progress is being made. I thought keyb us was a program I had to download from keyb.com
Changing the config file did nothing. Using keyb us command at least the / can be used for the \. I have the drive mounted. The install.exe is in the O:/T7G/INSTALL dir. All I have to do is figure out how to install.
So this will work when the official installer won't? In another forum I asked about a beta DirectX Player that was included in the game files. I assume it was Trilobyte's attempt to make the game work with Win95/98/NT. So assuming I get it going... am I better off using DOSBOX or the beta player?
OK I got the install function to work but I'm getting an error that I need MSCDEX. So I guess I'm through here and it's off to a different forum. Thanks all!

Thanks, I did get that far. Stuck in a installation loop. I'm getting errors that I need disk 2 to install... even though I started the installation from disk 2. And when I try disk 1, I'm told to install from disk 2.
It have something to do with the names of the drives I choose. They are continous but a guide here was suggesting I use C and D.
