I was using VirtualDubMod to reencode captured videos to the XviD+mp3 (LAME) format but without success. The first weird thing is there are only ABR modes on the LAME dropdown list:

The second is - I am getting this error

right after conversion starts (with every bitrate selected).

I was able to convert the video with VirtualDub but the resulting video hangs my PC.

Does anyone know what could be the problem?

Try doing audio conversion to 44khz, 16bit, stereo, THEN choose your audio compression codec

It can be all done in a single pass.

Now I have another problem. I've made a capture of Sokoban so the sound is not very important (it's only Sokoban's footsteps). I've set video bitrate to 128 Kb/s (16 kB/s) and the lowest audio CBR bitrate I can choose is 96 Kb/s (12 kB/s) so the audio data is almost as much as video data.

Is there a way to maximally reduce audio bitrate/data inside .avi so it won't take 75% of the filesize? I've tried to force 'show all formats' and to use lower bitrates but the error is:
