VOGONS

Greetings,

I'm trying to build a faster DOS game system for use with DOS only 3DFX titles such as Whiplash and Archimedian Dynasty. The Voodoo card works fine on a 450mhz system.

I'm trying to use a Gigabyte GA-6BX7 with a 1ghz S370 Pentium III, Sound Blaster 2 ISA, and Diamond Monster3D (3Dfx Voodoo1), and 512mb PC133 ram. I've tried a handful of different AGP video cards.

The probem is, that while Windows glide games seem to work fine, DOS titles such as Whiplash will hang shortly after launching, assuming they get past the 3Dfx splash screen, which often is where they will hang.

I've tried running in Windows98se, 98se Dos mode, and MS Dos 6.22. I "think" my memory management settings are correct, since several picky DOS titles seem to work fine. I've used MS Memmaker to determine these settings. Otherwise, I can't seem to figure out what could be causing the 3Dfx hang.

I've tried a handful of BIOS setting changes, none of which result in stability, although some settings will prevent operation at all.

Does anyone have any suggestions about getting the Voodoo1 to work with a system of this type?

i've had a voodoo2 hang a lot on a 1ghz tbird before, at the point where i just said screw it and went to some agp card.
You could try stepping your 1ghz down just 50mhz

I use Dual VooDoo 2's (SLI) in a PIII 800MHz system, guess I'm just under the wire there. No issues at all.

Hey everybody,

Thanks for all the suggestions. The problem seems related to FSB speed or CPU speed (but I can't test that).

In setting the FSB to 133mhz to support the CPU and RAM at their correct settings (1ghz, 133mhz), something disagreeable happens to the Voodoo.

It is somewhat unclear to me what the problem is, as I had concluded the PCI bus was being overclocked, but the manual says it is 33.3 when the FSB is at 133mhz. Still, the manual warns against running at anything but 66mhz or 100mhz.

Once I set the FSB back to 100mhz, it runs fine, although the 1ghz CPU will only run at 750mhz.

Unfortunately, no matter how I set the CPU multiplier, it only runs at 750mhz (100mhz FSB) or 1000mhz (122mhz FSB). There does not seem to be any way that I can try underclocking the CPU in case this is a problem.

Perhaps the Monster 3D Voodoo1 only works on systems at 100mhz FSB when in DOS mode?

More testing needed...

Hello Crash. I am also testing a Diamond Monster 3dfx 4mb PCI card. In fact, I have two of them, both revision E cards. Have you had success with your "Monster rig"?

I am particularly interested in testing a game called Jedi Knight (Star Wars Dark Forces II), because it doesn't seem to work 100% using my Monster card. I get strange graphical anomalies, such as unnatural looking graphical defects and colours here and there.

Do you have this game? If so, and only if you have the time, could you see if it looks OK on your monster rig please? You see these strange defects immediately when you first start to play the game, so you don't have to go to any particular level or anything like that. The defects are only minor, but still they are everywhere you look.

Best regards, Robert.

I probably have Jedi Knight here somewhere, but it is apparently not a 3Dfx Glide game, but rather a Direct3D game:

"JK supports Direct3D hardware-acceleration only; proprietary rendering application programming interfaces from the game's era like 3Dfx's Glide are not supported"

This could indicate a problem with your DirectX version or some related settings. I'm currently testing on a DOS only system, so I can't run Jedi Knight right now (without Windows that is).

A Jedi Knight demo was bundled with the Monster 3D II (Voodoo2) so perhaps more than 4mb is needed for this game's textures.

Do you have any other Direct3D card with more memory that you could test on?

Thanks a lot for the Jedi Knight info.

Re: "Do you have any other Direct3D card with more memory that you could test on?"

Oh yes, this is no problem. In fact, I flashed the BIOS of a Matrox G2+ (G200) card, and played this game at my LCD's max native res of 1280x1024, and it looked very good indeed.

The thing is, regarding the Diamond Monster voodoo1 card, I simply enjoy testing out old hardware with old games, just to see what they look like, how they work, and if they work, etc! 😀

I also really enjoy testing out old sound cards too.

Best regards, Robert.
