I think they have people sitting at the backend of the system receiving alerts for empty searches and then fixing it on the fly.

Edit: Or better, initially their system have no hits, and the empty search triggers a web-crawl which later populates the caches.

Sounds plausible.

I submitted a broken links report to them by e-mail and that was fixed within an hour too. Kudos to them.
