The irony of step-by-step guides is that while they make things easier for basic users, they don't take variables into account. IOW, "what do about step 4 when step 3 isn't working".

I all fairness, it sounds like my own "BUILD Games" guide in the "Problem Children" thread may be no help at this point (especially since I don't know where exactly you're stuck...).

To be on the safe side, start with the basics. Run SETUP and configure "Sound Setup" for None for both the "Sound FX" card and "Music" card.

For choose "Screen Setup", choose 320 x 200 (Normal Mode) then save your settings and run BLOOD.EXE. It should run properly (without sound) in 320x200 resolution. Does it?

This is the problem I'm having with blood for XP.
Please take into account that I'm not a programmer at all, and alot of this information seems a bit over my head. But I think my video card is the issue here.

when I run cmd.exe, or nofl.com and try to go into full screen mode this is what comes up: "The video device failed to initialize for fullscreen mode."

When i try to run blood the same error comes up.

Dell
XP home edition
Pentium 4 1.60 ghz
640 mb of ram
PCI - GeForce4 MX 440

ok can i ask for help too ? 😀
i wanted to play blood again so i searched for the box and there was everything there cd-box, manual but no cd.Damn.Must have forgotten it on one of the lan-partys in the old days.So i downloaded it of underdogs.Its supposed to be the full latest patch version with plasma pack included.
Now onto the problem.When i set sound/music to none and graphics to 320*200 and check compatibility (I have windows xp)
I get to a loading screen with the blood-dripping line and the blood with plasma logo.and then i cant do much more.
people from the underdogs forum wrote this version would be completely runnable.Maybe someone can test it to see if its just me or if this is a faulty version ?

missing folders (missing directory structure) seems to be the most possible solution so far,because the unpacked version doesnt have ANY.Not one.Can someone count his blood folders and tell me how many and their names ? Thx

Ow, ow, OW!! That's a MAJOR error. You weren't trying to hack the VGA.SYS file like we were here, were you?

If that's not the case, it sounds like maybe your FSVGA.SYS file may be hosed. Hrmm...

Well, yes, if this is as you've described it; NOTHING can run from the command prompt in full-screen mode. That means any and all DOS programs.

PCI - GeForce4 MX 440

Hrmm. This is on the low-end of video cards, but should still be more-than-capable.

No, I've never even heard of VGA.SYS. This is the first time that I've been trying to get older games on this computer.

Ugh. Go to your START menu, then find and choose "Command Prompt" (should be in either your "Programs" directory or in "Accessories". Press Alt+Enter to make it full-screen. Does that cause the failure?
(It will if what you are describing is accurate)

If so, try downloading and installing NVidia's latest drivers for XP at http://www.nvidia.com/content/drivers/drivers.asp

Hopefully this may just be a glitch where the OS isn't properly identifying your card (which, in theory, might prevent full-screen/direct hardware access).

If not, I'm not sure what to do. Either your video card is defective or possibly some other program is using nasty direct-hardware-access. Running any special hardware add-ons? (special controller adapters, motherboard monitors, etc)
