As opposed to buying an old Roland Sound Canvas SC-55 or SC-88, is there any reason not to get a modern Edirol SD-20 instead? This would be for DOS games through DOSBox, so actual MPU-401 emulation or old MIDI-IN/OUT ports are not important, just the sound quality and GM/GS authenticity.

Does anyone have the SD-20?

I have one, though supposedly it isn't based on the SC-55, and doesn't respond to every GS command. I just picked it becasue it was cheap. I haven't actually played with mine much. I have used it with the Increible machine, using the MIDI out on my sound card. It plays music when the MT-32 option is selected, but not the GM option.

Do al ittle more research.

Yah, research shows it's not a good choice for SC-55 mode. Oh well...

Come to think of it, is there a USB MIDI module that sounds similar to Roland Sound Canvas? What is the best-sounding USB MIDI module out there?

Never thought this thread would be that long, but now, for something different.....

Yes and no. The older boxes without native USB can sound like the SC-55, which is what most old games are voiced to (and the MT-32). The later Roland/Edirol boxes have USB, but the samples are different. It's quite a conundrum. There is always a midi-to-usb adapter too, but it's nice having everything integrated.
