I just installed "Symantec Endpoint Protection" to be a virus scanner, as well as "Spybot search and destroy" for adware, and I've installed several windows updates since last I tried to run dosbox, but now it won't open. It gives me the following error "The application failed to initialize properly (0xc000007b)".

This error occurs for some dos programs that formerly ran in XP as well. I would like to try running them in dosbox, but was surprised when dosbox itself had the same error.

I've tried to unistall and reinstall dosbox, and I get the same results. I've tried turning off the virus scanner, and adware blocker. I've tried restarting any number of times.

Any idea?

You sure you didn't get infected?

I haven't used Symantec's Endpoint Protection but it likely uses a service so if you don't disable the service then it will still be running....

You could try reverting back to a day when you know that DOSBox worked.

DosFreak is right.Disable the GUI or options of it and try again. Protection programs such as Symantec or AVG may cause problems or conflicts with DOSBox. I remember having problems with a game, which i tried to run via DOSBox. AVG didn't let me install the game at all 😳 .It may be that you will have to uninstall completeley the Program if only shutting down the GUI or disabling options of it won't work for you.

I figured it out. Symantec declared war on Java, and kept deleting dlls thinking they were spyware. I exempted the java directories, and reinstalled java, and now everything works.
