Here's a photo of my DOSBox box! 😀

I played these games on it (using DOSBox) -

Might and Magic III (The Isles of Terra)
Lands of Lore I (The throne of chaos)
Thunderscape
Eye of the beholder I
Anvil of Dawn
Faery tale adventure I

All games worked great! 😀

Faery tale adventure worked better than on my "real" DOS box!

(One minor problem, the Sierra game "Betrayal at Krondor" ran a bit slowly.)

Fans attached to those two thermalright heatsinks run at 800 and 500 rpms. Very slow, nice and quiet. Speedfan says CPU is 29c, 8800GT core is 45c. IMHO, you don't need much air blowing through the fins, so long as there is some air blowing through them - and also the heatsinks are enormous.

Edit: CPU is an E8400.

Why? I thought E8400 should be fast enough for demanding DOSBOX games.

Never thought this thread would be that long, but now, for something different.....

Hmmm, interesting! I remember messing about with that game's settings in the Options screen, by setting the detail to "max" and also altering something called the "stepping" options.

I will dig out the CD again [I think I put it in the attic; had a tidy up recently!], and reset the options back to default and try it again.

I will "edit" this post later with an update. Thanks. 😀

Is it slow, or is it choppy? Remember that increasing frame skipping value will make the game runs choppier.

Betrayal of Krondor is a low-res game. Even Pentium 4 should be fast enough to run such game in DOSBOX.

I would say both. I just dug out the CD and tried it again. This time I set detail to high (not max), and turned off all sound options. It helped, but the game still runs slowly when you move around.

Some of my dosbox settings are -

frameskip=0
scaler=normal2x
core=auto
cycles=auto

Also, when you first run the game there is a kind of "loading, please wait..." message screen which stays on-screen for about 30 seconds. It's as if the entire game is in "go-slow" mode for some strange reason.

the initial loading is slow as the game tries to fill the entire ems memory space with data I recall.
Have you tried something like
core=dynamic
cycles=20000
?

Water flows down the stream
How to ask questions the smart way!

Ah! That's it! 😁

Now it's really fast! Thank you very much. 😁
