Hi everyone, sorry if this is not strictly related to DOSBOX, but it's driving me nuts an I didn't know where I could get help; this was the only place I could think of.

Basically this is it: I love Dark Sun's music, and I want to listen to it as I remember it (with SoundBlaster sounds).

I'm no expert but it seems that DOSBox uses Window's Microsoft GS Wavetable SW Synth (or whatever else depending on your soundcard) to play MIDIs, but it doesn't really emulate SB's sound.

My question is - is there a way to emulate SB's sound? Dark Sun's music sounds terrible with the MS wavetable thing.

Thanks a lot in advance, I'll appreacite any help!

select a different soundcard in the game maybe.
if you select midi music then dosbox forwards it to the host.
If you use adlib then dosbox emulates it.

Water flows down the stream
How to ask questions the smart way!

Dark Sun always sounded best on the GUS (Gravis Ultrasound) when compared to the other wavetable synths of the day. You'll need to enable it in the soundcard section of your dosbox.conf configuration file. Then you'll need to install the drivers and patches as you would've had to do with a real GUS.

Grab the full driver install here : http://www.urr.ca/dosdrivers/gravis%20ultraso … /gusmain353.zip

extract all the files from each folder into a singular folder, mount that in DOSBox and run INSTALL.EXE from within DOSBox. Follow the prompts and use the default settings provided.

Once that's complete you'll need to select Gravis Ultrasound in the sound setup for Dark Sun : Shattered Lands and you'll be amazed at how atmospheric it sounds.

Thanks Qbix. I guess I'd like to know if anyone knows about some kind of plugin for Winamp, or a way to change the default MS wavetable thing so that it sounds more like an old SB card in Windows, maybe not inside DOSBOX because I just want to listen to the music.

I already have the .MID files that were extracted from the game, but they sound too crappy 😜

I found somewhere around this forum something about an Adlib plugin for Winamp, which I tried, but it doesn't sound right, particularly on the drum parts.

Anyone else has any ideas?

Thanks!

dh4rm4, that worked great, thanks a lot!
Basically I just installed the GUS drivers and used their MIDI player to play the MID files I have. They sound beautiful. Huge improvement to the Windows sound.

Just for the sake of my curiosity, would the same work for SB16 cards? I.e, if I installed SB16 drivers under DOSBOX would that make the MIDI songs sound like they did with old SB cards?

Thanks again!

SB16 doesn't need drivers on Dosbox. I haven't played Dark Sun: Shattered Lands, but I assume it has some kind of a setup program. In the setup, instead of General MIDI, choose Adlib or Sound Blaster for music, which gives you the classic OPL synth sound.
