I'm attempting to play Microprose's Master of Magic, and it tells me it requires 2700k EMS, significantly more than the 16384 given in the configuration screen. Is there any way to increase the EMS to 2.7M+?

System Specs:

Motherboard: ???
Processor type and speed Pentium 4, 1.8 GHz
Amount and type of RAM: 256 MB SDRAM

Sound board: Sound's not really a problem, I have sound disabled at the moment.

Operating system: Win XP home edition.

Game name (and version, if applicable): Master of Magic. As far as I know, it doesn't have any alternate versions.

Reproducibility: Should be obvious. It always requires the 2.7M of EMS to start.

Sound mode used: I've turned sound off in an effort to reduce EMS requirements but no effect. The sound isn't an issue anyway.

Video mode: Software, the game uses no 3D, and the problem isn't with resolution

According to this,
~vladr/compat/list.php?appid=71
someone's gotten this to work before, but I don't know how.

the 16384 is actually 16Mb
so it way more then 2.7M you want.

Yet the game still complains that it lacks the 2700k EMS it needs to run.

EDIT: Strange. I tried the same thing with ITEMMAKE.EXE, a file that comes with the game, and it says, "You must have at least 0k of expanded memory" then closes. Maybe the program can't recognize the EMS memory? I know I have it enabled.

You problably have the same problem already discussed in other threads:
showthread.php?threadid=1860
showthread.php?s=&threadid=1931

Your motherboard probably has no upper memory block available for an EMS frame, but to be sure we need to make a test. Follow the advice in the first thread mentioned above: create a small batch file called GO.BAT with a single command:

MEM /C >VDMSMEM.TXT

then run it with VDMSound. It will create a text file named VDMSMEM.TXT with the output form the MEM command. Post the contents of the file here. We will also problably need to know a little more about your computer, such as the motherboard model or the manufacturer/model.
