Ok, Here is my problem,

I just installed Quest for Glory 1 VGA on my computer. The Game ran OK. I didn't know about VDMSound or Abandon Loader or anything, so I used the setup options to disable sound and music. The game ran fine, until I had to 'fight' someone. At this point, the game was running WAY too fast for me to play. (but only during these fight sequences). After searching the web for a bit, I found the Abandon Loader.

So I installed Abandon Loader, which told me to instal VDMSound. I installe VDMSound (newest rev), the update, and Launchpad. I then 'tried' to run Quest for glory 1 (VGA) from abandon loader. The game will freeze on the first opening screen (whether I run setup.exe or hero.exe). I tried messing with a few settings, bu nothing seemed to help. So I restarted and tried running the exe 'hero.exe' like I used to before I installed abandon loader ect. However, instead of playing normally, it now freezes on the opening screen. I also tried setup.exe, with the same result.

So to summary:
Game worked OK - needed slowdown in parts
Installed abandonloader, and VDMSound (and updates)
Game froze when run through abandonloader
Game Now freezes hen run normally

Is there anything I can do?

I am running a P4 2.4 Ghz, 1Gig SDRAM, on an ASUS MBAP4s533-X, using onboard sound. (NTFS WIN2k)

Please Help.

Yeah, the game's probably still configured for either IRQ5 (what Windows' emulation uses) or IRQ7 (what VDMSound emulation uses) and then when it probes that IRQ for a card nothing responds so it sits there waiting. Re-run the setup program with/without VDMSound.

Yes, it’s my fault.

One of the few useful entries at NT Compatible says this:

If you are running the Quest For Glory I VGA floppy disk version, you need a special patch for it to run without freezing and with sound using VDMS. If you are unsure which version you have, if you get an "Unable To Initialize Your Audio Hardware" message when it first loads, even when running VDMS, or if it completely hangs at random intervals in the game, you need the patch. The Quest For Glory Collection CD version shouldn't need the patch. Get the patch at http://www.gamesdomain.com/patches/q.html

Having said all that, since you have a 2.4GHz processor, you might just want to run it in DosBox. Seems to work fine and you never have to worry about timer bugs.

I tried running install.exe (I said setup.exe before.. it's really install.exe).

I ran Install.exe by just clicking through win2k. It froze
I ran install.exe through abandon loader with VDMSound off. It Froze
I ran install.exe through abandon loader with VDMSound on. It froze.

Although.... i downloaded DOSBox (after seeing it on this site), and the same program runs beutifully (with sound and everything). So, I guess I am in buisness. Although I REALLY like the front end of abandon loader. I would still like to igure out why it doesn't work. Does DOSBox use VDMSound? Should I try to uninstall, and reinstall VDMSound?

Also, this program ran ok before I installed all these programs. So I don't think I need the patch.

Update:

I was just playing QFG1(VGA) using DOSBox and two things I have noticed:
1) I have no keyboard input (this is OK cuz everything is mouse driven)
2) It crashes every now and then (this is bad)

So I am back to square 1. I started playing around with just trying to use the 'open with VDMS' options, and that seems to give me some different results.

If I try to open hero.bat, it freezes (again) but now it gives me an 'unable to initilize sound settings' message. So this got me to try to run the install.exe with the same 'open with VDMS' settings as hero.bat. This opened the install utility, but now that i had the keyboard problems with DOSBox, I suspect that maybe the install utility is NOT frozen, but mearly my keyboard won't operate. (This is a text driven configuration program, and the task manager does not report the window as 'frozen')

Any idea why VDMS might be disabling my keyboard?

Just starting INSTALL shouldn't cause that kind of reaction, regardless of VDMSound, audio, etc... It sounds very much like you other problems going on...

Does DOSBox use VDMSound?

No it has it's own emulator. Be aware that it only emulates up to a "Type 3" model (basic Mono 8-Bit SoundBlaster). VDMSound will emulate up to a SB16 (16-Bit Stereo).

Should I try to uninstall, and reinstall VDMSound?

It sounds like your PC needs checking for other problems right now. Especially considering the latest outburst of virus and worm attacks.
