I downloaded and installed the last version of the windows installer from Microsoft.
Unfortunately the problem is still the same...

You have to run as "Administrator" (not just any user with administrative privileges). Also, check if the C:\WINNT\Installer directory exists.

PS: All M$ products use MSI, so the problem (very likely) lies with your system not with the installation package.

I tried on a different Win 2000 Advanced Server with SP2, logging on as Administrator.
The result is always the same.
I verified that C:\WINNT\Installer directory exists.
I also succesfully installed a Visual Studio package (just to try if the installer works).
I also followed the troubleshooting instructions I found on the Microsoft knowledge base:

Then I tried again unsuccesfully.

Maybe the origin of the problem is some sofware I have on both the machines.

That seems extremely odd. I've never heard of this kind of thing happening before. (That's not to say that it hasn't, I've just never heard of it.)

...also make sure that you have permissions to create stuff in C:\WINNT\Installer. But that would be more of an accidental thing (not having permissions), and don't see how it would affect two out of two machines you tried. Weird. I think VDMSound uses MSI 1.2, so you'd need at least that (i.e. make sure you haven't installed MSI 1.0).

I have the same problems and tried all wroten in the previous posts. Installed Win 2000 SP3 - Installer 2.0.

try to copy vdmsound.msi file to the desktop... sometimes the filename is too long or the file is not recognized by windows.... (please see my post, Win2000 Keyboard/Display Problem... ) Hope this works!

hosed W2K? more like hosed FAT/NTFS partition.

Run CHKDSK /F.
