Anyone had any luck with Discworld. I still can't seem to get sound using VDMSound.

I know that Discworld 2 has some issues with sound, but it works. I imagine that they both use the same (or similar) engine, so I'm not sure why Discworld 1 wouldn't.
Yes, it’s my fault.
Well, I don't get this.
I have Win2k PRO @ home and Discworld (as DL'ed from the Underdogs) and everything works just swell (music, speech, etc.). Using VDMSound 2.0.4 with "Update 1" (I imagine it also works without "Update 1"). Using default settings with LaunchPad, so nothing fancy there.
Do you get an error, or just no sound? Have you run CONFIG.BAT/SETSOUND.EXE? Do any other games work with sound on your system?
V.
I finished Discworld2 using VDMSound under WXP. It had some issues with speech like Full Throttle, but it didn't bother me.
I have Discworld1 installed and it starts up fine and music and speech works, but I haven't actually yet played it.
... and I successfully finished Discworkd 1 ( http://www.the-underdogs.org/game.php?name=Discworld ) with VDMSound under Win2k without any problems, with both MIDI music and digitasl sound effects (speech).
Say, creech, check out http://vdmsound.sourceforge.net/compat/list.php?appid=30 -- have you installed the patch?! I think DISC104.EXE is the patch in question. Hmmmm, it appears that the patch is for DWII. Crap. In any case, you can get it from http://www.thediscworld.co.uk/d1patch.htm (link seems broken, try http://www.alltheweb.com/go/1/H/ftp/ftp/ftp.s … s/d/disc_up.zip instead).
If that doesn't work either then tell you what: take a look at the list below and compare it with what you get on your computer. Spot any files that are different and I'll try to send them to you (I did "dir /os" to sort them by size, which should make matching a bit easier).

It would be much easier for the guy, Vlad, if you just made an SFV and attached it. That's a lot of files to manually check sizes of.
Yes, it’s my fault.
Well, he can always get GNU "util" Win32 port. All you need is awk and diff. Otherwise can always use Excel.
What's SFV anyway?
V.
SFV = Simple File Verification. It's basically a file with CRC32 checksums.
eg. For the DOS4GW files:
; Generated by WIN-SFV32 v1 [added for sfv32 compatibility]; Using hkSFV32 on 08.22.2002 at 08:53:00; http://www.big-o-software.com/software/;1_6.EXE 099EFB691_8.EXE 323764221_9.EXE 7DD43C8B1_92.EXE C8E3CF7D1_95.EXE 95D35B4D1_95_2.EXE 3B750E061_97.EXE 5CC34B0F1_97_2.EXE CB2144471_97_3.EXE EA7106EB2_01A.EXE A47C6A1F
Note: Big-O Software's hkSFV32 is probably the best SFV program I've found. However, the Big-O site is dead, at least at the moment. There are, however, tonnes of other SFV utilities. I'm not actually sure WHERE I found my copy of hkSFV32, heh... I suppose you can always check the FastTrack or Gnutella networks for it. (It is freeware.)
Yes, it’s my fault.
I can play the Discworld version from Underdogs under XP with SB sound and midi music without VDMS. The drawback is that you must use the basic 8bit SB2.0 driver.
Yeah, that's WinXP's crappy built-in DOS sound support.
Vlad, seriously, give the guy an SFV file so he can check his files. Um, also, just since you haven't, please read the POSTING GUIDELINES. Thaaaanks.
Yes, it’s my fault.
wrote:I can play the Discworld version from Underdogs under XP with SB sound and midi music without VDMS. The drawback is that you must use the basic 8bit SB2.0 driver.
Good, so the game works without VDMSound. But what on earth happens when you run it *with* VDMSound? No sound? Then what most certainly happened is that you ran CONFIG.BAT *without* VDMSound (bad!), ao the game auto-detected WinXP's settings (i.e. IRQ5), and not VDMSound's settings (IRQ7). So it would then be normal to get sound *without* VDMSound and no sound with VDMSound. If you mean to run the game with VDMSound then please run the CONFIG program with VDMSound as well!

Not sure if you will ever see this, but can you tell me how you got Discworld 2 to run under XP please? I've tried everything I can think of and it's just not happening.
I tried to install the DOS version earlier in an XP DOS window but kept getting a "No supported SuperVGA chip detected!" error, so that was the end of that experiment.
Use VDMSound and check "Enable VESA" or whatever in the VDMS Launchpad.
Yes, it’s my fault.
Thanks, I'll give that a try.
It was a no-go unfortunately. The DOS install program starts for DW2 and no longer gives the SuperVGA error, but now it just kicks back to the desktop for seemingly no reason shortly after.
Trying to reuse the shortcut that LaunchPad created just crashes Windows Explorer.
Thanks anyway though.
That's really weird, since I can get it to run fine here. What are your system specs? (POSTING GUIDELINES!!)
Yes, it’s my fault.
wrote:Trying to reuse the shortcut that LaunchPad created just crashes Windows Explorer.
What do you mean by "Trying to reuse the shortcut"? Double-clicking on it again, or popping up the properties? Also, could you please give as mcuh detail as possible (e.g. screenshot of error message/box) about the Explorer crash?
V.
I mean double-clicking it, it causes Windows Explorer to crash immediately. Unfortunately there is no pertinent information in the crash (other than it is in module kernel32.dll) but I will try and grab a screenshot of it shortly.
Specs:
Soyo K7V Dragon Plus Motherboard (VIA KT266A)
AMD Athlon XP 1700+ (1.47GHz)
512MB Crucial PC-2100 DDR
Gainward GeForce3 Ti 200 64MB (Detonator 31.00)
C-Media CMI8738 On-board Audio (latest drivers, v639)
Windows XP Pro, SP1
I know it's a bit of an imposition, but you possibly give me a run-through of exactly what you do after putting the DW2 CD in the drive please? I might be doing something wrong (though I'm not sure what).
Should also say I'm using the latest version of VDMSound (with Update 1) and LaunchPad.
Here is a step-by-step to show what I did.
Put the Discworld 2 CD1 in the drive (Lite-On DVD-ROM, LTD-163) (should also point out that this is the European version, Discworld 2: Missing Presumed...!? as opposed to the US release called Discworld 2: Mortality Bytes, although they are the same games, just different titles) and cancelled the autorun screen that pops up to prompt me to install the Windows version (as this doesn't work under XP).
Navigated to the drive with Windows Explorer, right click "install.bat" and pick "Run With VDMS" with the little icon" -> Custom Configuration -> Create New -> Advanced -> Compatibility -> Check "Enable basic VESA support" -> Next -> Uncheck "Remember" (as it's on a CD-ROM so it gives an error about not being able to write to the disk otherwise, which is obvious as it's a DVD drive and can't write to CDs) -> Finish.
The screen goes black, I see some messages flash by about DOS4GW runtime or something like that, then it kicks back to the desktop.
I then tried copying the whole CD to the hard drive and trying it that way, which is when the shortcut does get created in the folder (as I check the "Remember" part). I get kicked back to the desktop again, then when I double-click the shortcut to run it again, Windows Explorer crashes with an error in kernel32.dll as shown.
Hmm, it does not seem to be crashing Explorer now, not sure why as it did before. Each time I try to reuse the shortcut VDMS made (double-clicking) it just does as before, gives the black screen, goes through something about DOS4GW then back to the desktop, so I'm clueless as to what is going on 🙁
Try to get the US version from theunderdogs.org and see if behaves the same. I'm asking because I finished DW2 (from the UDogs) uinder Win2k with VDMSound and it worked "out of the box" without problems (no fancy settings or tricks, just "Run with VDMS" in LaunchPad).
When you get the Explorer crash, do you get something like "Press OK to exit, press Cancel to debug"? I want you, if you ever get this again, to trigger a stack trace (by pressing Cancel I presume) at which point wither Dr. Watson will pop up (don't cancel Dr. Watson though!) and will write some information in C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\DrWatson\drwtsn32.log, or the Microsoft debugger will pop up if you have Visual Studio installed (at which point you can see the stack trace from one of the menus, I think the "Debug" or "View" or whatever it is called menu).
Thanks,
V.
