I am using DOSBox with a program that needs the ctrl-function keys that DOSBox uses as "special keys." The instructions say that the special keys can be remapped with the mapper, but it is not at all clear how to do that. How does one select, for example, Ctrl-F8 in order to remap it? And what should it be remapped to, just to remove the DOSBox special key from it.

How can I remove the special keys so that the function keys operate normally within my DOS program?

  1. Start the keymapper by pressing Ctr-F1
  2. Notice the block that has "Shutdown", "Cap Mouse" etc
  3. Click on "Shutdown"
  4. See that it has a binding of F9, with Mod1 (ctrl-key) enabled
  5. Click "Del" to delete this binding
  6. Repeat steps 3..5 for the other keys in that block, with the possible exception of "Pause" (which doesn't use a function key)

You should probably assign other key combos to these things, especially the mapper itself as you will not otherwise be able to access these functions.

Note that, unless you click "save", you'll need to do this every time DOSBox starts.

If you have saved and can't start the mapper because you've removed its shortcut key, start DOSBox with "dosbox.exe -startmapper".
