I recently bought the LucasArts Classic Adventures from eBay. The disks are working, but I've had no luck with installation. The files on the floppies are compressed, with a .XXX extension. Thus the only way I can imagine getting the files off is with the installer. When I try to install, the installer appears to be working, but will not actually install anything. Has anyone else had any luck with this collection? Any help would be appreciated.

What environment are you trying to run the installers in?

Have you tried using DOSBox?

At first I tried DosBox, but then both by just running in XP and using VDMSound. Here's the processor my computer uses:

Processor: AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 6000+ 3.0 GHz

Perhaps it runs too fast for the installer.

And the behavior in DOSBox was the same as running directly in XP? Did you actually mount both the floppy drive and a directory on the hard drive in DOSBox and install from one to the other?

Yes I did. I tried both mounting my actual floppy drive and mounting a directory as a floppy drive. Neither worked.

You might want to lay out in more detail the procedure and configuration you used in DOSBox (and/or XP). Your explanations are kind of terse so it's hard to know if you're skipping any steps or doing anything incorrectly.

You're right, I haven't been giving that much information. That changes now.

First, I copied the files of each floppy disk into 7 folders. I then mounted the first directory as a floppy drive and mounted a c drive:

Z:> mount a c:\games\LucasA~1\Disk1\ -t floppy
Z:> mount c c:\games

Then:

Z:> a:
A:> install

Which brings up the installer. It asks to select the games I wish to install:

Maniac Mansion
Zak McKraken
Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade
Loom
Secret of Monkey Island

I am unable to select the first one, but select the last 4 and hit enter. It comes up with a screen that says:

"Installation is NOT complete poke yourself in EYE 1."

It shows this 10 times, for no reason I can imagine. These appear instantly after hitting enter above. Nothing happens after this, and the installer exits to DOS after hitting enter a few times. Nothing has been created.

You should try with

mount A A:\ -t floppy

Some floppy/CD installers are picky about disk labels and directory structures so MiniMax's suggestion is good.

I see someone else posted with a similar issue on another forum 7 years ago, but got no response: http://www.lucasforums.com/showthread.php?t=69397

No luck. Exact same results.

Edit: Is there any way I could perhaps extract the files without using the installer?

Maybe. Try opening them in a hex editor and see if you can see some useful header data. They could be a common archive format that's been renamed, or they could even be self-extracting archives.

Perhaps you could try making images of the floppies, and then mounting them via imgmount?

If all else fails you could use a debug-enabled build of DOSBox and try to determine if there's a particular action that is causing the problem.

Well, I opened the files with a hex editor and I can see file names embedded in the data. Also found that the first three letters in each file are "LFG". I tried the standard archive types with no luck, but my searches give me at least some hope.

LFG = LucasFilm Games? Probably a proprietary format.

Yeah probably proprietary. If you're lucky and the data isn't compressed, then the filenames you're seeing are probably accompanied by offset data that tells you where in the archive file each individual file starts and how big it is (kind of like a WAD file from Doom). I can't find anything on Google about the format though, so you may have to decode it yourself and write an extractor from scratch if all else fails.

Are we to assume that you did try to use the -label option when mounting your floppy?
