Mobo: Asus P2B, latest BIOS.
AGP: nVidia MX 440 8x universal.

Problem: You see the win98 desktop for about 1 second (in VGA mode, not in "graphics driver mode"), and then you see a blank screen with a "DOS like" flashing cursor in the top left hand corner. That's it, game over, reboot time.

I pulled all the components off this mobo, and pushed them on to another Asus P2B - but I get the same problem. (At least that kind of rules out a hardware fault with the first mobo.) Either this gfx card doesn't like the P2B, or my HDD has got so cluttered up with junk, that its current win98 installation is causing this problem to occur.

So you didn't installed a fresh copy of the OS - possible problem no. 1

Yes, you may be right that the VGA does not like the mobo - possible problem no. 2

Also forgot to tell that there are som problems regarding the AGP universal slot - not that universal as it seems...

Here, you can find more info about it - http://www.playtool.com/pages/agpcompat/agp.html

Hope it'll help.

Thanks. It's a very good webpage, I've seen it before. It says that the MX 440 x8 card is a Universal AGP 3.0 Card, and also the Intel 440BX mobo chipset uses AGP 3.3V. If you look at the table titled "Motherboard And Card Compatibility (table 35 from the AGP 3.0 specification)", it states that the Universal AGP 3.0 Card will fit in and work on *every* type of AGP motherboard. Therefore, the MX 440 x8 card should (in theory) work.

BTW, my other "crappy" AGP testing gfx card, the Radeon 7500 (Universal AGP Card) works OK in this mobo.

It WILL fit, but WILL it work? 😀....guess you have to try more and more...try using XP or other OSs...we'll see...I just browsed this page, didn't pay much attention to it, not needed it now, no porblems 😀...

Well, if the radeon works well, it may be some stuff regarding that even the default drivers won't work (for some reason) with the GayForce, but I may be wrong. Try using both cards with distinct OSs, I think that this will bring up some new view...
