I've just downloaded and installed Dosbox. However when I start it, it is very slow and basically renders my PC useless as the response times is very long. I'm running XP. Am I doing something wrong?

Possibly.
You won't get a better answer than that without telling us what kind of computer you have or how you configure/run DOSBox.

CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E6750 (2.66Ghz)
Mem: 4GB DDR 667
Harddisk: SATA 7200RPM
I have not made any changes to DosBox config, other than install it and started it up. Any help would be appreciated. I want to run Frontier II.

So your whole system is slow and unresponsive, or just programs running inside of DOSBox?
Also, what is the video hardware in your system?

Write this line before you start the game;
CYCLES 20000
otoh if you're running fullscreen try another output option like opengl or ddraw
