Performance slows down

Performance is fine after I first start it up but as I use other windows and then come back to dosbox windows it gets to be painfully slow.

using dosbox in windows 7 64bit ultimate.

config:
[cpu]
cycles = max
[autoexec]
mount c c:\nv
c:

using I7 cpu running at 3.8Ghz with 6GB ram and SDD hard drive

What settings might I be missing?

I tried that but that makes everything much slower from the start. But that did lead me to set it to 30000 which makes it quick from the start and so far also keeps it quick as I go between my various windows. At any one time I usually have 30 - 50 windows open.

So thank you. You helped solve it.

You might try cycles = max limit 30000 and also try pausing DOSBox (alt+pause) when you're planning to put it in the background for a while.

This week I've been keeping two paused sessions of DOSBox open (Wizardry 7 and Star Trek: 25th Anniversary CD-ROM Enhanced) in the background while playing World of Warcraft on a Core 2 Duo-based gaming laptop without any issues.
