Dear knowledgeable folk,

I have recently had the urge to play the old classic title from Crystal Dynamix The Horde. Unfortunatly for me the OS on my computer is Windows XP which has a positive dislike for any old DOS games.

When i try to run it with compatibilty settings set it just drops back to desktop after starting Dos/4GW

I have tried VDM Sound to load the game but it bails with the error "An Exception Occured in thread 3116 (adlib playback)" and gives the option to continue put the error just keeps popping up and never gets any further. If i disable adlib it loads Dos/4GW for a few seconds but then drops back to desktop.

I also gave the latest CVS of dosbox a whirl but it hangs after starting Dos/4GW.

The version i am using is very old and i can only assume it used to work, has anyone had any success getting this game to run under Windows XP either by emulation or by tweaking or perhaps an old computer. Any fresh ideas would be greatly appreciated as i really must smite the Horde once again with trusty Grimthwacker

Thanks in advance

hmm for dosbox try disabling dpmi.
(make a configfile: look for dpmi)

futher try playing the game without sound. (some protected mode games have sound issues under dosbox)

Water flows down the stream
How to ask questions the smart way!

Per your suggestions i went back and gave dosbox a whirl, i disabled the sound emulation and low and behold the game loaded and plays without a hitch. It was a bit slow to begin with but upping the emulation speed fixed that in no time.

Now its time for some serious Smiteing of the Horde

Many many thanks

Load up your DosBox configuration file, find the [dos] group near the bottom of the file and change it to read:

dpmi=false

ok, my dosbox config file didn't have this option written, but I wrote what you told me to write. Still it doesn't work, actually it quits dosbox when I try to run the horde. tell me about deactivating sound for me to see if it helps

I think you have to search in the directory of the horde for a sound utility.

it mostly called setup.exe
or setsound

But as this game uses dos4/gw the game is protected mode. and will not work in dosbox 0.58.

The one who got lucky probably used an unsupported build of dosbox.

I advice you to wait for the next version of dosbox.

Unfortunately, Horde doesn't have this. It's either an auto-detect system or "hard-coded". About the only way to disable audio would be to disable the DosBox audio (in it's config file).

But as this game uses dos4/gw the game is protected mode. and will not work in dosbox 0.58.

Didn't work in the last CVS I had either. It's very picky.

I just tried the Horde after reading this thread, and it works fine with sound for me - I just needed to disable DPMI. This is using the build from ~9/Oct.

Current CVS and I cannot get the horde to work. It looks like a GUS problem to me.
