Hello there ladies and gents. I've searched the forums for this problem and haven't found anything. The problem with the game is pasted below. Hopefully I've followed forum guidelines; if not, I await the flaming.

I would be forever indebted to you if you could solve this problem! This game is a masterpiece of gameplay.

# Laptop Type

Dell Inspiron 1525

# Motherboard

Dell 0U990C
North Bridge: Intel GM965 Revision C0
South Bridge: Intel 82801HBM (ICH8-ME) Revision C0

# Processor type and speed

Intel Core(TM)2 Duo CPU T5550 @ 1.83GHz

# Amount and type of RAM

2038MB Samsung DDR2

# Video board w/ RAM amount and type

Mobile Intel 985 Express Chipset Family 448MB

# Sound board

Intel High Definition Audio HDMI

# Operating system

Windows Vista Home Pro

# Game name (and version, if applicable)

Top Gun: Fire at Will

# Description of problem (be detailed: saying "it's jerky" doesn't help, saying "the player sprites seem to be jerky when I'm pressing any of the arrow keys" does)

Despite going through the game's set-up and affirming that I can hear all of the test sounds, only sound effects can be heard in the game. The "main" sound track (i.e. character's voices and any cutscene videos) do not appear or cannot be heard; instead, there are intermittant pops and whistles through the speakers. I do not think that my speakers are to blame and the relevant drivers are up-to-date.

# Reproducibility of problem (always, only once, always but only on a specific level, etc.)

Always

# Sound mode used

Not quite sure how to answer this! It's the "standard" sound of the game which is missing; in that sense, I have not selected a mode.

# Video mode (Software, OpenGL, Direct3D, or Glide, and resolution)

Playing it in DosBox 0.73. Video is fine in both windowed and expanded modes.

# Version of emulator (for VDMSound, probably 2.0.4 or 2.1.0; for DOSBox, 0.58+)

DosBox 0.73. NB. VDMSound doesn't solve this problem, either.

how have you configured sound card in game's setup?

I used the Autodetect feature which suggested:

Soudblaster 16/AWE32
Port: 220
IRQ: 7
DMA: 1

The subsequent sound test (conducted in the setup) was fine. It was a voice clip and there were no problems with it at all.

Thanks for your suggestions but none seem to have helped.

I have the newest DosBox (0.73) and have tried various combinations with Core and Fixed Cycles.

I'm also concerned at the lack of video cut-scenes from the original game. However, this is not essential. What is important is getting the sound right so that the player can hear commentary from other pilots since this can alert one to what has occurred during the mission (failure, moving on to next objective, etc.)

Is this some crippled download or from original media?

.. and make sure you're using the same mounts for playing as you did when installing.
