I'm testing this FIC socket 7 mobo:

http://stason.org/TULARC/pc/motherboards/F/FI … um-PT-2011.html

If I set the BIOS set up External Cache option to "write back", then after the BIOS POST DRAM memory count has finished, an error message appears on the screen saying "Cache memory error". The BIOS set up area screen then automatically appears. And so I must change this External Cache option from "write back" to Disabled. Then, after the BIOS POST DRAM memory count has finished, I get no "Cache memory error" on the screen, and I can then proceed to boot in to Windows 98.

The mobo is able to accept both 72-pin EDO RAM, and also SDRAM. I am using just 1 stick of SDRAM, 64MB. Is the external cache really faulty, or is there something I can do to avoid seeing this cache memory error? Thanks a lot for any ideas.

Solved. Well, it's more of a "workaround" I suppose. I removed the single SDRAM stick of 64MB RAM, and replaced it with a pair of 16MB FPM SIMMs, giving a total of 32MB. Now, with the BIOS "External cache" option set to "write back", this does not produce any external cache error message during the BIOS POST.

Also, I successfully flashed the mobo's BIOS. It's nice to see that the BIOS file and flash utility were easily obtainable from FIC's website. Everything I needed was here -
