Hi guys, i'm playing monkey island 1 or 2 (their original floppy versions, copy protection and all 😎) in DOS 6.22 Yet i cant seem to get any sound out of them. i've applied all the updates i could find off of the lucasarts website, yet no matter which parameter i set for the sound device (Im using an AWE 64 Gold ISA card) when i load monkey island, i get zero sound. Its strange because other DOS games ive tried work fine with the soundcard. nothing wierd with the settings on my card either, Port 220, IRQ 5 and DMA 1. Anybody got any ideas? Ive got the sound working i n windows for workgroups 3.11 (no special tricks needed there), and i tried playing the games from within that incase that made a difference but they dont run. Its wierd, on my win98 machine which has the same card, it plays absolutley fine.

Is your AWE card initialized as it should in the DOS enviroment?

Well i assume it is. Every other DOS game i've tried works with it, windows 3.11 also works with it using the drivers that came provided with 3.11. and its a P3 650mhz, and ive applied the 486 patch for the games.

wouldnt a P3 650mhz be too slow for dosbox ?

The Lucastart adventure games aren't very speed sensitive...

It might be worth checking that the ISA speed is 8mhz in the BIOS

btw. which games have working Adlib music on your machine with the AWE 64 gold?

Really? never noticed it on my PIII 1ghz rambus rig

Might be related to what hardware you have...

You were right about the initialisation Amigaz, I downloaded ctcm and the aweutil (plus mixerset, etc.) and got it working. Although I must say the mt-32 soundfont isn't all its cracked up to be. is it possible to connect a real mt-32 (if i ever get one) to my AWE64 Gold (I presume thats the only way i can do it since thats my only sound card)? (Btw i'm using REAL DOS)

Glad it worked 😀

The MT32 stuff that the AWE cards do sound very cheesy

Not sure if MI 1 & 2 uses intelligent modo so the Roland music might sound wrong if you hook up an MT32 with a joyport to midi adapter

intelligent mode is about working/not working, nothing to do with wrong sound

and i don't think any lucas arts game requires intelligent mode to work

And it will never be. While it might come close to some of the sounds of the MT-32, it will never be able deal with the SysEx messages that a real MT-32 or even Munt can process.

hmmm, so hypothetically how would i connect a real mt-32 to my pc. switch to an LAPC-I card instead?

you can have both cards, or just connect mt32 to mpu401/gameport

but the easiest way would be to use dosbox with buildin mt32/lapc emulator
