Sorry, the installer only works for 1.4, 1.151 and 2 and up. It is version specific because it uses a binary level patch that I have to have a copy of any given version to make the patch. It updates the game to version 2.00b, which address most of the bugs in the game and includes a DOS interpreter that can be played directly in DOSBox. I only have a copy of versions 1.4, 1.51, 2 and 2.00b. I could make it work for 1.65 if I had a copy of it, but I do not.

How do I verify which version of the game I have?

I'm having the exact same problem as the OP, and I've been trying to use VDMSound to compensate, but it doesn't seem to want to work.

I used the installer earlier, but I didn't see anywhere that it clearly identified the version I have.

I checked the INF file I have:

Does this mean I have ver. 1.51? If so, this should work right?

I don't mean to bump, but I'd really appreciate some correspondence on this issue.

I essentially walked away from it a couple months ago, and now I'm back to it again.

I tried the steps again with no luck. But I'm still not sure if its because of the version I have or not. Could someone confirm that the line of code of I quoted confirms my version?

GOG.com has a "The end of the world" sale and many of the Sierra games are heavily discounted 😀

Open the VERSION file in Notepad. It will tell you what version you have. The installer will work with versions 1.4, 1.51 and 1.65c English and various languages of version 2.

That's not particularly informative. What happens when you try the installer discussed above?

A message still appears saying the game is not compatible. I've tried DOS, and making it compatible but there is something I'm not doing correctly.

Did you even bother to try the installer linked above? If it is an unsupported version it should yell you what version game you have.
