I would like to put two 16MB 30-pin SIMMs (32MB total) in to the two SIMM memory slots on a Creative AWE32 sound card. Do I need to be careful what type of SIMMs I buy? Would 60ns non parity SIMMs be OK? Thanks for any advice.

It takes regular non-parity 30-pin SIMMs AFAIK. I don't think the speed rating matters. It will only report 28 MB of 32 MB though because that's the max it can address or some such.

As Swaaye replied, 60ns non-parity SIMMs will be fine. Those are what I've used throughout the years in all of my AWE32s with no problems 😀

BTW, it's been eons since I last purchased 32-pin SIMMs (for my AWE-32s), but back in the day the absolute cheapest place that I found for new sticks was at http://www.datamemorysystems.com . Dunno if they even sell 32-pin SIMMs anymore though.

So what did a 16MB 30-pin SIMM cost in 1994/5? 😁 😳 😳 😳 😁

Dunno (don't remember) about 94/95, but I dug up my receipts for the last 30-pin SIMMs that I had purchased for one of my AWE-32s (on 11-28-1998, from the afore-mentioned Data Memory Systems)... US$35.00 per stick for 16MB 30-pin 60NS SIMMs 😀

Heh, I seem to remember that being a real steal, being that even at that time, they were pretty much discontinued <grin>.

(edit) Also found some reciepts from a company called Dalco for some 4MB 30-pin 60NS SIMMs... US$12.50 a stick on 3-6-1998. IIRC I had bought those for some customers who had purchased the variation of the AWE-32 card, the AWE-32 "Upgrade" card (CT1920 I think -> http://cgi.ebay.com/Mint-Creative-Labs-CT1920 … =item255b758049 ); which was simply the MIDI portions of a regular AWE-32, and used an audio cable via the cards "Goldfinch" connector to pipe the sound to the PCs primary sound card.

P.S.

@retro games 100,

If you have any problems locating some 16MB 32-pin 60NS SIMMs (and if you're in the US, don't wanna pay too much for shipping), shoot me an email to richnagel@earthlink.net with your postal address, and I'll see if I can dig up some for ya (free).
