I'm testing a Gigabyte 7IXE4 mobo, AMD 751 Irongate North Bridge, 756 Viper South Bridge. It's got 2 ISA slots - useful retro board. It runs at 100 FSB (200 DDR). You can overclock it up to a maximum of 115 FSB. Here is its support page. On it, there's a CPU support list, and it suggests that the maximum processor the board can support is an AthlonXP 1500+ Palomino, 18u. (100 FSB / 200 DDR, real clock speed 1300 MHz.) However, this chip doesn't overclock too well, and they are also rare.

Out of curiosity, I tried a Palomino 2000+ CPU (133 FSB) in this board, and it worked! And it overclocks to 115 FSB. Naturally, this chip doesn't run at its native 133 FSB (266 DDR) speed on this board. Instead, it runs at 100 FSB. It's still a better choice than the 100 FSB 1500+ Palomino mentioned earlier, because it performs slightly better and it overclocks better too.

I want to try a Palomino 2100+ in this board. I notice that the Palomino 2000+ that works in this board is green, but on ebay they are sold as either green or brown. Does the colour of these chips make any difference? Thanks a lot for any comments. 😀

where it says:

"Yep, it's minty green. AMD says it's changing its processors to match its company color. However, we all know AMD always has Intel on its mind, and I'm sure it didn't hurt that the new color makes this CPU look an awful lot like some Intel products. Whatever the case, AMD is transitioning all of its chips with organic packaging (currently only the Athon XP and Athlon MP) to this new paint job. The change is purely cosmetic, so don't expect big performance gains—unless you think "extra minty goodness" is worth a few more points in 3DMark.

Strange thing is, they still made brown Athlons after that. Iirc the Barton 3200+ I have in my old (relatively speaking ofcourse! 😜 ) main rig has a brown package and was made somewhere in 2003 I think.

I think they had two different fabrication plants building them so maybe they weren't both using the same process.

The Palomino was build in 0.18 micron where all later XP's were made in 0.13 micron. I'm not sure why there are different color packages but all I know is that this color shouldn't matter for it's performance.

Well by process I meant the whole process of manufacturing one. Maybe one factory was still using the older substrate or whatever it's called.
