Weird sound blips

I think I may have reported this years ago, but even after some DOSbox updates, it still seems to persist.

I started to play Arena again and everything seems to be working fine, but every now and again (especially when interacting with NPCs and using maps or other menus) the sound will drop out for a tiny fraction of a second, and then sometimes the sound will be played back at a very high pitch for a tiny portion of a second. It's hard to describe, but I have evidence. This was recorded via stereo mix since the built-in wave recording and video recording do not seem to record the problem.

My current sound config for DOSbox is this:
[mixer]
nosound=false
rate=44100
blocksize=1024
prebuffer=20

[sblaster]
sbtype=sb16
sbbase=220
irq=7
dma=1
hdma=5
sbmixer=true
oplmode=auto
oplemu=default
oplrate=44100

Upping the blocksize did not help the problem.

I'm running the game on dynamic core using maxed out cycles. This gives me a better framerate than using auto since it automatically chooses normal core by default and tends to run crappily.

Well yeah, I guess - but that was an older version. I've also changed specs since there, upgrading to a E8400 Core Duo and Windows 7.

Changing the prebuffer to be larger did not help either. I'm not sure what to do.

I think I found the real problem behind all this - I was using the wrong configuration file! Though DOSBox 0.74 uses %appdata% for configuration, when copying some old files over from another hard drive, I put some older DOSbox installation files into the newer DOSbox folder, causing it to use the wrong configuration. Something in there must have been causing it, because now that I'm using a new configuration, everything seems to be working properly.

Weird!

Can you check if a clean dosbox config file works correctly, or if your working (==no blips) configuration deviates from the defaults?

I've heard sound artifacts like that with Daggerfall and Battlespire, and I'm pretty sure they're just quirks of Bethedsa's games.

Daggerfall as a really interesting bug with torch sounds as well, where they'll eventually start sounding like a loud electronic squealing. I remember that happening on a real machine before ever seeing/hearing it in DOSBox.
