I tried plugging in two different kind of external harddrives, both usb, in my old pc with win ME.
One of them is self-powered and the other one requires a cable.

Windows is not frozen, I can do everything properly but it just don't show up on "my computer".

The only difference is that in the task bar, the bottom right part, there's that little icon that tells you that an usb device is connected.
Same goes with the other external harddrive.
This one actually shows up on my computer, but if I try to access it, it'll freeze after about 5 seconds, requiring a hard reset.

Both external harddrives works fine in windows 7

ok,and beside being some dumbass grammar nazi, does someone has a solution for this hd problem,or you're good only at trolling around and increasing your post counts by writing senseless stuff?not all people registered to this forum attends Cambridge university like you assholes do

What hardware are you using?

one is a terabyte westdigital hd,the other one is LaCie,but when recognized by windows ME,it said "hitachi" something, can't remember now

I've actually added a valuable hint first in the post. The ntfs part...

It has nothing to do with being a grammar nazi, but everything with expecting coutesy when people post. Since you are obviously able to write in an understandable way, it proves that you were initially just too lazy to write proper.

For the record, my apologies for being a bit over the edge. Even though your post foprmatting wasn't ideal, you came here for help and not for grammer classes. I'm sorry about that mate, we're not an evil forum 😉

To get back to your question, I don't have an idea as to what might cause this.
The only thing right now that I can come up with, perhaps theres something with your USB ports?
Have you tried other devices in your USB ports? Like a USB flash drive?
We need to find out if this is hardware or software 😉

And sorry for the rough treatment mate! 😊

As I wrote most likely a ntfs problem. I'm pretty sure that's the problem with the first drive. The second one may be simply too big for ME.

Since when are external harddrives formatted in NTFS instead of FAT32?

Not sure, but iirc at least one of my external drives (either 320GB or 500GB) worked fine in my ME

Why do you write like a 3 year old boy if you don't want to be trolled on a tech oriented forum?

Only another 3 years old boy could recognize the grammar of another 3 years old boy..am i right?anyway i appreciate what you people said, except for this user,wd,he\she just want to keep on rambling about this all day long.you know, like those people that MUST correct someone on the internet "because he's wrong".

anyway, the usb ports work fine with all other devices such as keyboards, mice etc,so i dont know at this point what can i try.neither of these hd came with cd with old drivers,so i don't know if its about something that must be installed first.

Tetrium,do you installed some particular drives for those hd,or you just plugged in and they worked?

I see a closed thread and banned user coming up...

For the fourth time, check the format of the drives. AND huge hds might just not work. Google this.

Use linebreaks, spaces and capitalize the right characters. You are asking for help, so try to keep your stuff readable.
I don't want to waste my time figuring out what you wrote, because you deliberately choose to obscure the information.

If you can't do that for some obscure reason, then find a different forum please.
