My system is a Dell Dimension 8400, Pentium 4 CPU 3.40GHz, 3GB RAM, WinXP, Audigy 2 ZS soundcard, with a Steinberg MIDEX3 MIDI interface (USB). The Audigy 2 ZS has been having crackling/popping problems, so am about to install an M-Audio 2496 soundcard.
I'd like to run an old MS-DOS program (ProLib) that stored synth patches and transmitted them to my synthesizers (DX7, TX81Z, TX816, M1, D-50, MT-32, D-110, ESQ-m, etc.) through an MPU-401 interface on my old DOS-based computer.
I've not yet installed DOSBox, and am posting this in order to avoid problems that might arise.
1) Has anyone used DOSBox with a Steinberg MIDEX 3 interface?
2) Can the new M-Audio 2496 co-exist with the Audigy 2 ZS? Should the Audigy card be left installed or removed completely?
3) Has anyone run ProLib, or any other DOS-based synth patch librarian program, using DOSBox?
Am guessing that if DOSBox can communicate successfully with an MT-32, which some of the other Forum posts seem to indicate, then it should also be able to communicate with other synthesizers.
All suggestions will be appreciated.
