Hello,

I have some questions/issues. When using CD-ROM drivers particularly on one system I have NO issue with being thrown into MS-DOS, the other system will always throw me into MS-DOS compatibility mode even using the same drivers.

Using ATAPI307 drivers (meant for pioneer) on a Pioneer DVD-115(16x DVD-ROM) no issue. Now using either Sony or Samsung CD-RW I have tried the atapi driver, also sony and samsung drivers, I'm always tossed into MS-DOS compatibility mode. I'm confused by this because my Pioneer should technically do the same thing right? Protected mode driver should cause me grief like the sony/samsung?!

I'm gonna list the systems, both runnnig Windows 98SE with just about everything setup the same.

System 1 which doesn't have issue:
Pentium III-S 1400MHz
Gigabyte GA-6VTXE (Via 694T chipset)
512MB PC133 CL2
Geforce 4 Ti 4600
Diamond Monster 3Dfx Voodoo 2 12MB SLI'ed
SoundBlaster Awe64 Gold w/32mb expansion
Pioneer 16x DVD-ROM
WD SE 120GB
7-Port USB 2.0
D-Link 10/100 NIC PCI

System 2 which gives me issue.
Pentium III-S 1400MHz
Soyo TISU (i815EP B-Step)
512MB PC133 CL2
Voodoo 5 5500 AGP
Diamond Monster MX300
Samsung 52x CD-RW or Sony 24x CD-RW
WD Caviar Blue 160GB
D-Link 10/100 NIC PCI

I've been thinking would this be an intel chipset driver (or intel hub architecture) issue? I don't want to move my Pioneer since I painted before install and just don't want to scracth it up. Can certain CD/DVD drives actually work with no fuss with original dos drivers or just some fluke of nature on my 694T chipset?

Software wise I think most is the same:
Windows 98SE
KernelEX 4.5 Final
NUSB 3.3
Unofficial Windows 98 SE service pack 2.1a
137gb patch

does sound like a driver issue to me
did you try the standard issue OAK CD driver instead?

I'm curious also if the triones drivers will work... I doubt it though since they were meant for socket 7 boards (430 series chipset)....

I have indeed tried the Oakwood cd driver, same deal. I'll have to look up the triones drivers and see how well they work.

Among others I tried the Toshiba atapi drivers found in another thread here at vogons but same thing happens. So thats Sony/Samsung/Pioneer/Toshiba/Oakwood that has been tried out. I want to try out a regular CD-ROM at this point and see what happens. Maybe memory mapping or drivers have issues with CD-RW's?

Where did you find so much SDRAM-133 CL2? *Me wantz!*

I found a ebay auction not long ago with 7x sticks of Crucial 256MB PC133 CL2 sticks and 1x Crucial 256MB CL3. Won the auction for under $20 bucks shipped!!

Also have 4x Kingmax 256MB PC150MHz sticks (with micro BGA IC's!). Since I got a few working i815EP B-Step boards I need to try this stuff out and see if it runs at PC133 @ CL2 speeds.

My 694T mobo's don't seem to like running CL2 speeds with even the Crucial CL2 stuff.

I too stocked up on Crucial PC133 CL2 256s on ebay once years ago. Sometimes they would show up in quantities for fairly cheap.

About MSDOS Compatibility Mode, that is usually caused by loading a real mode config.sys DOS driver for a drive. I think you have a grip on this though if I read your post right. I have absolutely no idea why it would on one system but not on another.

Yeah, really as I understand it the Pioneer setup shouldn't work with the real-mode setup but here is a pic:

have you tried gcdrom.sys also?
