Finally finished my brother's socket 7 computer.

K6 333MHz CPU
FIC PA-2012 Motherboard
3x 256MB PC133 for a total of 768MB
ATI Rage IIc 8MB video card
SB0200 sound blaster live! 5.1
10GB IDE HDD
8x DVD/CD burner Optical drive
ATX Case / 450W PSU

Works great except boot up sees the cpu as a "K5 - 333" 😖 . I don't see a real problem there though. It might be because it only officially supports up to 300MHZ K6.
Now to install those fun old schoool games.

Theres a good chance your motherboard can't cache all the memory. Usually it goes up to 64MB or 128MB/256MB on Super 7 boards.
Otherwise, nice rig 😉

Care to post any pics?

That board has a Via VP3 chipset which should be able to cache up to 1GB of memory

Yeah Anandtech has a lot of cool stuff dating back to 97... if you click one of the categories along the top of the page (eg CPUs, Motherboards etc) then scroll to the very bottom of the page, and click the very last page number it will take you back to their earliest articles. They have stuff on CPU, mobo, video cards, hard disks etc. I find Anandtech to be much better written, generally, than other sites like Toms Hardware for example.

I <3 me some socket 7. But 768mb RAM? That's just crazy. I figure the 2nd and 3rd stick is gonna be pretty jealous of the 1st stick. 😁

One of the main reasons I decided to help him finish the system was because I researched what that board is capable of, ram wise, and realized that I had just the perfect sticks to throw in there sitting on my desk (in static wrap of course). Kinda wish I could put a faster CPU in there but it seems to cap (in theory) at 366MHz and I don't see a point yet in spending money on a faster one.
Digging for my camera now.

Yeah I hate when I bury my camera and can't find it. 🤣

You could run a K6-III at 400Mhz (6x66Mhz), the newer K6-2's and newer ones will see a 2x multi as 6x 😉

Ok, I finally got a pic of the board. Sorry about the poor quality of the photo, it's not my fault... obviously it's the fault of the subject as it's not very photogenic and refuses to remain still during the shoot.

EDIT: My first Photo upload to vogons, yay!

Thanks! I might be getting some new K6 processors (including a 570MHz unit if that's even a real chip speed) to try in my FIC 503+ and I guess this unit too.

Np! 😉

Btw, Is that a K6-2/570 you're referring to?
I'm not sure if your boards support mobiles, but if it does then K6-III+ is the way to go.

Theres a seller in Germany who's selling the K6-III+/400 ATZ for a very good price. I bought a whole lot from him, they are all brand new 😉

The ordinary K6-III's seem to be kinda hard to find, but a K6-III should be as good (or even better) then a higher clocked K6-2

I will have to do some more research in case I do end up getting the chips.
I have been told that they should work in my 503+ without much trouble.
I'm refering to the K6-2+ 570, just looked that one up and it should work with my board @ 6x95... at least I hope so (if not then I at least have a p233 or a K6-2 500 that I already know works). My biggest concern would be what effect it would have on the pci bus. But I'll save the rest of my 503+ talk for when I actually start to post on my super 7 (just waiting on a few parts).
As far as the PA-2012 goes, I have yet to convice my brother to change the CPU. He's more concerned with the video card not being compatible enough.

How dare you say that a Voodoo 3 16MB will outperform the legendary Rage IIc 8MB!?!
Ok I'm just kidding...we don't have the coin to drop on a Voodoo though, so I tested a TNT2 V770 in there and though it performs roughly equal with a Voodoo 3 I found that it hates the PA-2012. 🙁 I guess I'll just use it in my system. 😁
These are the cards I've tried so far.
ATI RAGE IIc = poor compatibility with games/low performance
TNT2 32MB = poor compatibility with PA-2012
S3 IX = poor compatibility/low performance.

Another option could be a Voodoo 2, but that requires a bit more messing around as it's a 3D only card.
The Voodoo 3 PCI will probably work though, as you'll evade the AGP problems that early AGP boards had, but Voodoo 3 PCI's are starting to get more expensive lately, so it may not be an option for you.

Well, after some searching, I decided to get a cheap Voodoo 3 2000 from Ebay. I hope it works out in the PA-2012 agp port.
I talked to my brother and found out that he had tried several ATI cards in the pci ports (with no success) before handing the project to me.
Lets just say that there is a reason my favorite 3D companies are Nvidia and 3DFX. 😏

I have a Hercules 3D Prophet 4500 (Kyro II chipset) AGP card picked up new in 2001 and the only motherboard of any vintage I couldn't get it working in was this Asus Athlon 64 board I had awhile back. It doesn't seem to consume too much power and so far, only major issue I can find with the card is that you can't get wide screen resolutions on it.

I have to admit, the 3D Prophet cards are great, but in my experience, they lack the compatibility with the games we're planning on running.
But I'm glad you reminded me of that card, it gives me another option to consider when I build my PIII. As far as lack of wide screen resolutions, I have a few widescreen monitors now for my modern systems, but for vintage gaming it just feels like an abomination. So no loss there.

Just for fun, I decided to try out 3d bench 1.0c in win98se on this build (with all the stats listed in the original post). I know it's not even close to being reliable but it was fun to watch it fly by at 139.6 FPS.
Defragmenting the hard drive now then I'll bench AvP or maybe try Quake III for real 3d benching.
