VOGONS

A week ago I made a fresh build of win2k professional. I put up VDMS for the purposes of running Megazeux, which a friend of mine said worked fine on his system. I hoped to not have to run into the direct I/O problem, but I did. I searched for the file that was listed as normally the culprit, giveio.sys. Nothing. I pondered for a bit and realized that I knew every single thing that I'd installed since bringing the system up. Xircon, winzip, winamp, and AIM, all of which are ruled out as causing it since my friend also runs those with no VDMS issues. AD-AWARE 6 and AVG 6, both of which I ruled out because I uninstalled them, restarted, and still had the problems. Since reinstalled. Gunbound and my motherboard CD are the only other things I installed onto my system. Since this is a known issue, I don't think you need to worry about hardware profiling, but here's some stuff that may be important. My main NIC, sound, and video are all onboard on my motherboard. I installed SiS630_730 vers 2.03 to take care of all that stuff. I think that's all of it. If anybody can illuminate a specific .sys other than giveio(which I don't have) which could be causing this, or a program that I should uninstall to get it working, it'd be vastly appreciated.

Search for files containing the string "Ke386". There should only be two, and those should both be video drivers.
BTW, I'd like to say that MZX doesn't quite run fine, there are some keysticking and timing issues.

Yes, it’s my fault.

Thanks for the info on that. I'd noticed the keysticking when playing it with sound options turned off. At least I could play it at all. I worked around the keystick, it wasn't so bad. As to the drivers, I came up with 3 files. ntkrnlpa.exe and ntoskrnl.exe, both in C:\winnt\system32. I assume those are the 2 I'm supposed to have. videoprt.sys is in C:\winnt\system32\drivers. Hmm. 2 of them are listed as nt kernel files, the applications. The other one is listed as a driver. Any thoughts on this?

OK, I lied, so there are three.
Hm. I dunno what to say, other than, it's probably SiS's fault, based on my prior experience with their crap.

Yes, it’s my fault.

Well, thanks for the assist anyways, Snover. I'll just assume it's SiS, also, and since you seem to know stuff like this really well, I'll avoid SiS in the future. I'm getting a new system soon, so I'll keep all this in mind. Thanks again.
